How does publishers and publishing work?

Question APG (ARTISTS PUBLISHING GROUP) is looking to sign me but what does having a publisher mean and what does it do for me? And better yet... Do I get an advance? lol

BMI I think it is $250
then sign with that company if they are offering a deal that is reasonable and will push really push your recording and don't take a 5 year contract
try to keep it low as possible in years

Singers/Songwriters that you'll never hear of that are responsible for many hit songs but only made the songs to be sold to major artists and a publishing company can held you with this

there are like 5 different "standard" publishing deals
some just are out to buy copyrights
