How can one make scary, dark, ominous chord progressions IN HIP HOP

I know an online dude who knows Shawty personally, he has a few TM103 tracks he's done but thankfully (and sadly) he isn't leaking them.

I always liked how Shawty stepped it up on TM102, nothing was ****ing with Hypnotize and J.E.E.Z.Y.

but back on topic: MINOR scales should get you a darker feel. diminished sound heavy to me and I try not to use a diminished chord unless it's an extended dominant / V-vii type of deal.

when I hear Dminor -- I hear it as a dark ass key, plus I be hovering around the 3rd, 6th and 7th's in melody to bring out that minor quality.

I mean it's possible IT IS him. the guy I'm talking about goes by the name "Bunny Lover" online though and is a good friend of Redd's. so I honestly wouldn't know. cool dude nonetheless.
 
Just hear what you want to play in your head and take your time and "sound it out" on the keyboard.

Got a few guys mentioning that its in your soul... I'd have to agree.
 
LOL didn't expect to be called out in the OP...but to answer your question...think of it this way in the context of movies.....horror movies thrive on the suspense of something about to happen....much in the same way play with your instruments and progressions in the same vein....

1)Don't use traditional instruments or even instruments that traditionally go together....if you have a piano line...throw a kazoo in the background...if you have a saw bass....throw a trumpet with heavy chorus effect and reverbed the hell out. The drawing factor of most M. Night Shymalyn(sp?) movies is not only his twists(well used to be) but also the fear of the unknown/uncharted...let your music go there.

2) Don't land on the predictable chord...if you're going I, IV, V....the second time around go to I, IV, vi....but by any means do something crazy...once you get into the groove of a progression a million ideas will come out. When the blond girl is running from Jason and hides underneath the bed....you expect him to flip the bed over....but no this dude comes up through the floor! Do the same thing with your music.

3) Minimalism....alot can be said with just a few notes. Philip Glass and Bernard Hermann(composer of Psycho & Cape Fear) live in this domain....think of all those times you jumped in a movie when nothing was happening....all because of a few dissonant chords.

learn to play moonlight sonata first movement by behtoven on piano. study the chords, especially the section where you play a staggered arpegio of diminished chords going upwards.

Notice in the the tutorial videos he uses a layered piano string patch with a very long release which really gives off an eerie sound. Try stuff like that and just experiment.......

I know very little music theory but just by playing keys I find out what is dark.
Use a lot of brass too.
