Ok...I am familiar with Gemini's crappy reputation and have even used one of their crappy mixers, but...
I have read about 4 or 5 reviews from various DJ magazine and scratch dj websites and they all have glowing reviews saying how great the UMX series is.

Is it really true, is Gemini no longer making ****ty mixers?

here are some links:

It would seem so.....

As far as i know, yeah, the UMX's were a break in the cycle for Gemini.
I haven't really heard a bad word against them.

they are nothing close to a break from the norm of any gemini mixer that ive ever seen or used, as far as quality(i own a UMX-7 had it for about a year) the only quality componet is the x-fader, which i will admit is damn good. In a nutshell they are prolly the best at the cost vs what you get... but fall short in terms of build quality and sound. Cheap parts all around, but like i said ive had mine for a year and only the cue fader is bleeding... the x-fader is still in top shape. I would recomend it to anyone looking for a cheap mixer in a bedroom setup ( i would never gig with it )

Yeah, i saw a UMX-7 for $100 brand new...
it just got me thinking 'cause its so damn cheap

everyone by now probably knows (ive said it enough!) that i own a umx-5 and i absolutely love it to bits - its a brilliant skratch mixer and has all the features i need, plus i had no way of affording a vestax, and im not sure i wouldve spent the extra cash on one if i had it, cos i need vinyl, plus new carts and i think that theyre the best vfm mixers on the market

well, its the same as the umx-7 feature wise (although i think the umx 7 has 2 mic channels, while this only has one), but it's really skinny so you can have your tt's closer together - brilliant for skratching, and no different from normal for mixing. (its a bit like comparing the vestax pmc 06 to the 05) one thing is it wont fit into a normal coffin , but other than that, its the same and i find it easier than a normal mixer being a skratch dj

i dont see what everyone means when they say it feels "cheap" and the sound quality's bad - mines obviously a one off cos mine's great!

Also, at $100. IT IS CHEAP!!!!;)

theres a huge difference between excellent value for money and cheap!

when i say it feels cheap and sounds bad i mean this:

-Crossfader knobs dont stay on under exessive skratching (had to wedge some paper between the prong and the knob to fix this

- The eq's blend over each other (meaning it is difficult to fully isolate sounds), if you have ever used a rane or a&h you would know what an eq is supposed to perform like

-The headphone pre-amp distorts when the volume is turned to about the "low-mid" range.. also distorts when too much bass is put through it (this goes for the channel amps as well)

-The knobs and switches are about as robust as a fisher price toy

im not saying that its a bad mixer... i own one and it works perfectly for my needs, just dont think that you are getting a rane for 100 bucks... the quality is simply not there

Obviously we wont be getting $800 mixer quality for $100...

How about compared to a $300-$400 mixer such as a Pioneer DJM300 or a Vestax 05 pro or 06?

Yeah........

I would say the Umx's - with the prices you can pick them up for nowadays, are probably the 'best value' scratch mixers.
I'd pick them over an 05/06 simply because
1) I've never been overly impressed with Vestax mixers - particularly the 05/06. They are o.k. but struggle when comparing them to scratch mixers in a comparable price range.
2) The Umx's have mid eq's and clearer level meters.

well, comparing the umx-5 ($100) to the vestax pmc-06 (around $340) i would actually choose the gemini. might seem mad, but i dont feel any difference in "quality" between the two, the display on the vestax is a bit weird, and as deft said, i find the eq better on the umx-5 with the mid level

oh yeah, and if you compare a umx-5 and about $240 of vinyl (or whatever else you buy ;))or a pmc-06, its a very easy decision for me, not sure about you

well if you have 200-300 to spend dont count out a used rane TTM mixer. The 52i can be found for around 200-250 and the 54i is around 300-350 on ebay.

Also the ecler smac series runs around the 300-400 mark as well.

What you should buy really depends on your needs... if you are just starting out the UMX is a perfect mixer for that (it only costs about 30 bucks more than a blue dog). At that stage your money is better spent on vinyl. If you only have enough cash for a few records after you buy your mixer then any mixer you buy wont be of much use.
