I agree with you Ill Rocka about Jtroups value to Open Labs, and if you look back, I explain the reasons why we couldn't help him in the past.

Here's the thing. If OL hadn't been promising me for the past year that "64 Bit is coming...Windows 7 is coming", then that would be one thing. But I've been asking for the better part of a year, ever since I started getting into the EWQL line of VSTi's. At first I was told...

"There are no plans to support 64 bit at this time"

Then when I started hounding them again in March, it was "64 bit is being looked at, but it would take an entire rewrite of MFusion...it's not very likely"

Then when I asked again in October, it was "We have a very special announcement on Friday (10/23). We're announcing upgrade paths for OL customers!


Meanwhile, for the better part of a year, I can barely manage to mix the projects that I have, because my MIKO is still running on Windows XP Home, with 3GB of RAM (even though it came with FOUR, why, IDK)


10/23 came and went with no announcement of any upgrade paths.

He decided to sell his unit and called us to tell us he was dumping us fo MC. We told him that we were working on an upgrade path but it wasn't ready yet and perhaps a deal could have been made. I will disagree that he is a reasonable man as all this was laid out to him and he still went on trashing our company on our forums.

That's an outright LIE. I NEVER called Open Labs and said I was dumping them for Music Computing. Matter of fact, the first ANYONE heard of my affiliation with Music Computing was DURING THE WEBCAST ON 10/20!!

Last time I spoke to Open Labs was a week before that, when I asked about 64 bit, Windows 7 upgrades, and I was told "we are announcing it on Friday". "Friday" didn't come until a month later.


When i participated in the Music Computing launch, not 2 hours after the webcast, my profile on the Open Labs website was REMOVED. Last time I checked, I still owned a Miko. Guess somebody got MAD. I didn't say not one bad thing about Open Labs.


And to address trashing OL on your forums, this was my first post on that forum, in which I was responding to the thread someone started entitled WHY SHOULD I STAY??

I had to join this conversation...


I've been a huge open labs supporter since I bought my Miko Timbaland in 2008 for $5000. It was head and shoulders above my Core2Duo, 3GB Ram machine...

But unfortunately, within the past 6 months, I've outgrown it. What used to be a powerhouse, wasn't able to grow as my skills did.

2GB of RAM just doesn't cut it when I'm running Cubase, Reason, Omnisphere, EWQL Play, Styuls RMX, and about 60 tracks of vocals, with plugins, and I'm trying to mix.

I understood not jumping to Vista. I got that. I even understood not jumping to Windows 7 RIGHT OFF...


But c'mon...it's almost 2011. My $5000 Miko, that was touted as being so upgradable, isn't. OL hasn't provided any upgrade paths for me to upgrade the OS. And in speaking to support, there's an upgrade path "in the works", that I have to pay for, and that will only get me as far as Windows 7 32 bit, and I'll lose the Timbaland app/sounds, that I paid the premium for in the first place.


Us OL users have been asking for a tilt screen for YEARS. Begging, pleading even. I'm not sure of anyone that even uses the built in screen, because it's at a very inconvenient viewing angle, if you have your unit sitting on a desk. We've been screaming for OS upgrades, 64 bit, etc, etc.

Reality is, Software passed the OL units by. Musicians crave the latest and greatest, so we can keep pushing trends and pushing boundaries, and those of us that own the OL units have been forced to innovate with out dated equipment.

It makes no sense that I'm getting clicks, pops and stutters when I'm using 4 tracks of Omnisphere, and 5 tracks of EWQL Play libraries. It makes no sense that I can't mix 70 tracks of vocals, with 20 plugins, because of the clicks and pops, due to there not being enough RAM allocated.

If we as musicians are investing $5000 plus into our gear, best believe we are investing that kind of money into our software...and those software manufacturers are supporting 64 bit. Cubase. Pro-Tools. Waves. EWQL. Spectrasonics. Native Instruments.


It seems like OL just hasn't, because they haven't HAD to. I mean, they were the only fish in the pond. So why did they have to spend R&D money on 64 bit apps and drivers? There were no other options for us. OL didn't have to give us any of the options that we asked for, because they didn't have to. I mean, where were we gonna go???


We're serious about our music, and we just want OL to be serious about our music as well.


Unfortunately (or fortunately), it took a former founder and CEO, and a former tech developer to form their own company, to kick OL into gear with what it's customers have actually wanted FOR YEARS.

Does that sound like trashing??? I think not. I was merely stating my predicament.


Then AFTER the MC product launch, OL posted a thread on their website entitled "WHO FEELS AS IF THEY ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE 64 BIT", to which I responded, saying this...

Cubase 5, Spectrasonics Omnisphere, Stylus RMX, EWQL Silk, StormDrums, Gypsy, Ministry of Rock, Reason 4, 50 tracks of vocals, and Waves SSL and JJP plugins don't exactly hum along on 2GB of RAM.


x64 is necessary...last year.

Older units have a few more issues because technology has changed so rapidly and will need new panels((master = $330, DJ = 300), Hard drives, Mobos, and touchscreens as well so it cost more. You sound like you know what your talking about, so how do we pay for that I ask?

I could give a shit about your Gen 5 sounds. I need an OS that can handle MORE RAM so that I can effectively run my THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS in Plugins that I've purchased to use in my projects. I don't give a shit about faders, Mobo's, etc. I'm good with my current processor. I just need a set of DRIVERS (aka MFusion), that will work on a 64 Bit OS.

Upgrading to Windows 7 32 bit is pointless, because i can still only address 2GB of Ram.


I'm more than willing to pay a reasonable price for 64 Bit MFusion for my unit. the newest version of Mfusion won't work with your panels which means it's useless to you because that's the point of it. to get you 64-bit with your panels, we would have to go back to that version and update it. You don't understand how code works, just because you change it for one version doesn't mean it changes all versions. If we spend the time to update all previous versions the cost would go up. I can't ask Ableton live to update version 3 to 64-bit for me, can I? So with the version of Mfusion that was updated to 64 you would basically have a Miko shell with no controls at all, not even the keys because the midi flows through the master control panell which like I said, won't be working. The responses you mention are true, no one from the old company thought it was necessary, or didn't want too pay the programmer to do it. Why would you think that Open labs has the same amount of resources that Microsoft does to update drivers. Roland was founded in 1972 and has something in the neighborhood of 2000 employees. Korg has been around since 1962. OL is so tiny comparatively, seriously, there are like 7 full time employees. Try comparing us to another smaller example next time. Plus, I don't think i can get any updates for my Ensonique TS-12. Shit, Reason isn't even 64 bit yet and they've been around a lot longer then OL!

Another thing that gets me about your situation is that you bought a Miko as a business tool to make money, it was an investment in your company. Have you not recouped that original investment by now? Engineers i know charge $50+ an hour, they make a killing. 5 grand could be made in a couple of months easy if you're good. So, i ask you, how much have you made using your Miko?

Pretty much. Changing the base architecture for a piece of software takes time. And they did it. So I'm not exactly sure what you're upset about. Going from one os to another is one thing. Changing from a 32 bit to 64 bit architecture is much different. My computer came with Win 95 but I can run up to XP on it. Because I knew what I was getting, and made a smart purchase. If I want to UPGRADE, then I'm gonna need new hardware. And I'm not expecting Gateway to do that for free.

And Windows 7 wasn't even next. It was vista. And I bet that Miko can run vista if you know what you're doing.

When the software standard moves up to 128-bit, and your StudioBlade is obsolete, hopefully you'll understand. That's how electronics work.

Pretty much. Changing the base architecture for a piece of software takes time. And they did it. So I'm not exactly sure what you're upset about. Going from one os to another is one thing. Changing from a 32 bit to 64 bit architecture is much different. My computer came with Win 95 but I can run up to XP on it. Because I knew what I was getting, and made a smart purchase. If I want to UPGRADE, then I'm gonna need new hardware. And I'm not expecting Gateway to do that for free.

And Windows 7 wasn't even next. It was vista. And I bet that Miko can run vista if you know what you're doing.

When the software standard moves up to 128-bit, and your StudioBlade is obsolete, hopefully you'll understand. That's how electronics work.

My iPhone isn't upgradable to the OS4, because my Iphone is the original, which was 3 iterations back. I don't complain, I accept that it's not gonna be upgradable forever, and support has to end somewhere.

But we're talking a $5000 piece of equipment, that's TWO YEARS OLD, that they just said "okay, we're not providing any upgrades for this".

I have a Generation 4 Miko. They are only on GENERATION 6. If I have to buy an entirely new unit every time they decide to make a minor architecture change, then it's not worth the cost.

I was sold an "upgradeable" machine that isn't upgradeable. And there are hundreds/thousands of people in my same predicament.


And the company's stance was "Oh well...buy another one or shut up".



So I bought another one...and now they are mad.

Sigh...Here's what they told you (I'm assuming, you posted it)

Here's the thing. If OL hadn't been promising me for the past year that "64 Bit is coming...Windows 7 is coming", then that would be one thing. But I've been asking for the better part of a year, ever since I started getting into the EWQL line of VSTi's. At first I was told...

"There are no plans to support 64 bit at this time"

Then when I started hounding them again in March, it was "64 bit is being looked at, but it would take an entire rewrite of MFusion...it's not very likely"

That's more than a driver change. That should be the end of it. Open Labs was not made to cater to YOU.

THEN DON'T BUY IT. DUH! Ipod's are on what generation now?? 2 generations ago is obsolete. And if I wanted a 2 generation upgrade, then I gotta pay for the new one.

So there were no patches or anything for the software? You're using OS 4.0, not 4.0.125.515?? Those are random numbers, but you get the point. Those are upgrades. How is it Open Labs fault a piece of SOFTWARE won't work with it? It's exactly the same as the iPhone argument. You want a SOFTWARE upgrade, but you're upset that your HARDWARE doesn't comply to the SOFTWARE'S requirements. It doesn't matter how old it is or how long something has been out. You got persuaded by marketing techniques (the same ones you actually use) and now you're mad about it.

They aren't mad you bought another. They are mad that they put trust in you and endorsed you, and you turn around and get the competitors product. And, go on their site and rant about how much better this new product is. You were their flagship promoter. Everybody on FP that had a question/comment concerning the OL products went to YOU. So when YOU started saying, screw them, try this new shit, of course they would be mad. Who wouldn't?

Well damn, guess I look like a dumbass. I thought M-Fusion was the program that housed the Timbaland sounds you were cryin about.
Either way, they are not obligated to upgrade it. EDIT: and since the Miko isn't running a dedicated OS, what's stopping you from purchasing a new motherboard, ram, etc. And upgrading it yourself? Keep the housing and max out the internals.
