EDM Vocal manipulation Techniques...?

So...everyone knows that a lot of EDM songs contain vocals with a high pitched up sound like a child or chipmunk.

1. What is the general sound design process for this...?

2. Are there ways of doing this without a vocal synth...?
 
There's a VST named "Glitch"; v1 is no charge. It has several effects that can apply well to EDM production; you may find it helpful.

Every DAW/audio manipulation tool, for the most part comes with a pitch shifter and tools like Autotune and Melodyne can be used to adjust pitch without severely deforming the formants.

It's not normally done using a vocal synth, they are normally pitched up vocals.

Normal vocals contain harmonics that are the same no matter what note is being sung, called 'formants'. When the vocal gets pitched up, these get pitched up as well, which is what creates the chipmunk sound. Some pitching software uses clever algorithms to preserve the formants, but it never works 100% well to make realistic vocals
