I listen to music & radio everyday to hear the new top songs. We all know you haven't made it until you charted on Top40 radio. I have come to notice that most of the recent Dr.Luke & Benny Blanco's songs have the same formula. These songs generate millions of dollars, as they get extensive airplay, millions of downloads (iTunes, ringtones), put in movies....etc.

Some can argue that they are getting over because the tracks are simple, they just have great writers. Some others can say they are genius because they found a formula that works & wins every time. I just say, they are rich as hell. lol

Put these two songs together. Both #1's. Producers, you tell me:

good observation and mix. yeah you can apply this to alot of pop tracks. i remember i downloaded some r&b tracks from a blog and was playing along to them on the keys and it seemed like every track was in the same key, used similar chords etc.

say what you want about the song quality, the producers like dr luke, jr rotem, red one, have mastered that formula to produce a pop record in todays business

RedOne is like my big bro. We do-produce together sometimes. All hit makers have a formula. I enjoy it. But sometimes the formula is really obvious.

I just want to hear others views. I appreciate yours bro!

Hit records don't lie. The people are loving their sound right now. I'm tryna get up there where they are, lol. It's gotta be doing a sound i believe in though.

That reminds me of this. Fast forward to 5:28

There are a basic set of rules that these top producers follow its just learning them then imparting their own sound to the rules that makes them successful.

Max Martin and Luke are very clever when it comes to writing and producing. I have noticed lots of rules and formulas they use, the most important part is having a very strong "sign-along" type of melody, like a jingle. They also seem to be extremely down-to-earth, which gives you a very good mindset.

Max Martin said songwriting is 99% about confidence and I agree. You have to be confident with your decisions, especially when you are doing pop.

debatable...

That's just my opinion and what i consider success. Your definition of success and mine might be different.

For example, someone who produced a Gucci Mane record and it charted #54 on Hip hop charts, but was played at every club around the US might think that as huge success. So your point is well taken.

Maxwell is a good example of success. His last album "BLACKsummers Night" only had one single reach Top40 "Pretty Wings." But he sold over 300,00 copies his first week. And went on to win 2 grammy's at the 2010 Grammy awards. So, you don't always have to be in the top 40.

Redone as a producer has 5 #1 songs on hot100, millions of ringtones sold, movie placements, and more.. Thats success as well.

There's no real right answer, its just my opinion.

saying you havent made it until you have gotten onto Top 40 radio is a huge insult to a lot of musicians who quite frankly could give a damn less about Top 40 radio lol. I think I get where you are going about your goals though

yeah...exactly where i was goin' w/ it...

I noticed this similarity the first time I heard California Girls and when I found out Dr Luke and Benny Blanco produced it I knew that this was their formula. They must be lovin life right now.

i didnt even read the rest of the thread until after that lol. Idk too many people look at the charts and use that as a measure of success. 1 hit wonders hit the chart 1 time and had a smash and are now working are Dairy Queen. The charts dont mean anything more than your song is popular. Pop culture is a wishy washy thing. One minute you are the biggest thing out there the next you are a punch line. Look at Michael Jackson. Had top 40 hits most of his life. And the day he died I got text messages from friends talking about his body was being turned into legos so kids could play with him.

Today's pop is derived from electro house (and a little bit of funk).
So that's not a big astonishment...

House has always been more of a question of formula... More than hiphop..

And well you find those kind of hit formula in hiphop too but the thing is that you dont have the same drum patterb and same tempo like in electro.

The instruments rarely change too.

So I guess... that's normal lol ;)

^Alot of that House & Death Metal sh*t sounds the same. Usually gives me a headache, lol.

Well if it isn't Jaylien 2010 lol, cool thread, it's what I think about a lot lately as far as producers' formulas go. What's been intriguing/bothering me especially yesterday was the use of the "2 key harmony chord". I was trying to figure out what it was called yesterday (fail)... but Let's go back in time. It started with DJ Sammy with the 2 Key harmonic chord. I think? whatev. then "Just Dance". Then "Tik Tok". Then "Rude Boy", "California Gurls" "Eenie Meenie", and now this new Sean Kingston "Letting Go (Dutty Love)" song (which sounds like Rude Boy produced by Stargate, they always use the same formula!!. They had a harp formula. Then an acoustic formula. now this??. I'm digressing but anyway, I think it all falls down to the catchy melody and the chords (like that video). But after studying Max (since age 5) and how I think he's the greatest, it only seems logical. I guess every top producer shares a similar formula, they just execute it differently and they flow with the trends. And you really got to have a knack for melodies also, which is why Danja's so dope. And another thing about Danja. He's well aware of the triad chord formula which is why I think he decided to try something different in Usher's "Stay Down".. phew. The End. Oh. On Lil' Wayne's "Knockout" song, it includes the popular chords such as the ones in the video! There's another to that list.. oh yeah, Dr. Luke's Nickelodeon tracks, those too.

What he do for Nick?

He's the composer for the show Victorious. He made the theme song "Make It Shine". And Miranda Cosgrove's "Kissin' You". I think they are pretty dope songs, not sure why though... but anyway they have the same template or whatever lol.

The more publishing they own, the better is their situation i guess.
If i remember right dr. luke runs his own publishing company. So i'm sure they're getting crazy money.

Can't knock on these guys. I like their production too much.
