I was thinking about getting the Mbox 2 with pro tools Le but was wondering if i could also use the mbox itself to record into Cubase if needed?

Thank you

I believe you can use digidesign hardware with other daw's.But protools le,hd and m-powered software will only work with digidesign and m-audio hardware.

Correct

If you're not buying it for pro tools, you're better off just getting a $100 Audio interface(that's all the m-box is). But you can route it through a regular DAW.

the mbox 2 would be a monter for $100. I think its worth about $300 its very similar to the firewire 410 but the $100 more for pro tools makes sense tho I like the 410 as a interface better

Mbox isn't firewire it's usb. At best you could compare it to a Lexicon Omega, or Mackie Spike, which are both actually way better built interfaces than the M-Box. In all honesty I have to say the M-Box shares more of the same features as a $99-149 M-Audio Interface. The $500 price tag(and this is coming from someone who owns one)comes from about $100-150 Hardware, $50 Software(unless you get the plug in bundle, then we'll say $100)and the rest is paying for the pro tools name, and major studio compatability. Whether you beleive it or not, that's honestly all there is to it. No different than buying a Pair of Jordans and trying to figure out what makes them so much more expensive than regular Nikes. Namebrand costs money.

i still disagree but I have no reason to go out and buy one Ive used the original mbox on a few occasions but never the version 2 so my opininons are coming strictly from paper

Thank you all. I was planning on getting the mbox 2 with protools LE Academic for $349.....and right now i got the lexicon omega and I like it but I’m looking to go legit and purchase the software this time around and sense I got a mac now it is harder to find software to download. lol so I was looking to sell my omega for $200 plus shipping and handling if anyone is interested.....but another reason is I am planning in a year to go to SAE audio school and they are running the mbox 2 with protools LE plus I would like to be compatible in the future with large studios...... Would I be headed the right direction to go with them mbox and protools over keeping the omega with cubase?

MBox 2 is rubbish.

There is far better out there.

Are you going to SAE in the UK?

Are there actually ANY advantages of USB over Firewire anyway? Apart from if you want LE instead of m-powered or you have no FW port...

In your situation it's worth every penny. People who are trying to be completely industry standard need access to pro tools in some form or fashion.

Although a lot of studios are primarily using Logic now.

Firewire is way more responsive. That's why they use it for transferring data to motorized fader mixers(the consoles with nobs that move on their own), but unless you're doing video there's no huge difference it will make. For audio USB or even direct audio input is just as good.

Ahh k. I've heard using USB interfaces on a laptop though can be hell.

Pro tools is still the industry standard. More major recording studios use Digital Performer than Logic. Some use Cubase. Some use Saw Studio(a ton of country artists). But 8 out of 10 software based major studios primarily use pro tools.

Don't know about that. I've mostly worked on Southern Cali Studio built computers and my home setup. I got a few friends running M-Boxes to Laptops, they've never complained, but i can't vouch for how good or bad it is.

I plan on going to SAE in New York City i live in PA so it's only like 5 hours away........I thought about Logic also but i downloaded a trial version and i don't like it at all.......people who own protools how is it? like cubase, or logic ? or different all around ? As i understand if i get the mbox 2 can't i run m powered pro tools and whats the difference anyways?

Thanks

Not sure if you can run M-Powered with an M-Box, but you can run it with a $99 M-Audio Interface. My main sequencer is Cakewalk Sonar 5. I've been using cakewalk since I first got into computer and I just know it like the back of my hand. All sequencers are pretty much the same, it's just buttons and commands are put in different places, so it's about getting familiar with one. When I record with pro tools, I have to think before i do. With Sonar it's basic instinct. But it's all about which program you're most used to. I often say I know pro tools like my left shoulderblade. Had it forever, but wouldn't be shocked if I found something there tomorrow I never saw before. I mainly have it for recording clients in my homestudio and for making pro tools files of my beats when artists request them. Even with such small ammounts of use I say it's worth every penny.
