Does not using curse words limit a rapper's odds for success?

So I'm having a discussion with my brother.

He feels that if I start cursing in my music that it will be easier to gain some buzz and eventually success with my craft. I disagree, since I see cursing to be more of a crutch in lyricism and I don't use that type of language in my life so I don't incorporate it in my music.

What do you guys think?

You can sound like the Tasmanian Devil and still be successful.

^ LMAO!

Naw but seriously, cussing isn't needed, esp. if you got a sick delivery! Or if you use cuss words sparingly!

if you a person that curses regularly, curse as much as u want. its you. if you dont then dont curse, cuz its not you. limiting you lyrically? from a listener standpoint i could care less if you curse or not. if you do curse though, always have an edit version.

Be you. Don't force nothing. People say it limits, others say it helps...keeping it real.. Huh! I mean some of these rappers can't rap 4bars without a four letter word. Crusing will crop you more than not. So in the end ...you got to do you. Hate to say it but look at drake ? He don't need to cruse but he does and it feels forced but hey he on and popping. But he don't need to though! Get the Will Smith effect..... Or you can occasionally cruse.. But just avoid going too far. I'm riding the fence on this one".......

When songs get bleep, people don't hear them, they hear silence or a beep noise. They then want to hear which cuss word was used. You can trick them with a clean version and an extra clean. The extra clean version will have bleeps on certain words that are not official cusswords. :) (That's me joking).

P.S E.T if that's you rapping you got a nice flow man.

Not cursing will give you a broader audience. People don't really need to hear cuss words, most people are desensitized to them. Think about all the songs on the radio, they don't have cuss words.

Beeps and dropouts are annoying.... so not cussing eliminates those.

Just use vivid descriptive words and you won't need to cuss. Nigga could easily be replaced with Brotha, cats, lames, potna, etc.

Ho's could be replaced with tramps, broads, etc.

... back in the day we made up new words... like skeezer.

Cussing won't increase your visibility, good songs will. I actually think it'll hurt more because people might have to limit where they can play it. A man with little kids that still likes Hip Hop... might opt to not play your song around his kids. A kid that doesn't have a car might feel better about playing "clean" music in somebody elses car.

Don't be a puppet, somebody "telling" you that you should cuss when you don't normally cuss is like a label saying "make this record... about booty, that's what's popular". Chances are that incorporating cuss words will make you self-conscious and it'll probably show in your songs or performances.

Send me another acapella - nexphaze@comcast.net (include the bpm if you can)

yeah i think the only accessibility i had was due to not cussing, and having my stuff able to play. I'm a more easy going guy though who expects his music to reach other easy going folks! hehe

Your post reflects my stance on the topic. I've done sync placements that wouldn't have been possible if my music included offensive language.

What do you need an acapella for? I can look around and see if I have anything... what did you have in mind?

Nothing in particular. I just do remixes when I get down time.

Naw cursing ain't nessesary in real life so your raps don't need them (even though for some rappers cursing is how they earn a living)

i can hardly think of a single person i know that does not drop an f-bomb every now and then <> IT SEEMS cursing has just become part of english in my lifetime <> its not so much what you say, its how you say it, words that heal, words that kill (?) I GUESS that if you want your music to have a shot on hot 97.5 or television or perhaps a strict religious audience : it should be without cursing <> i remember when the Fresh Prince was on stage gettin a grammy or some sort of award years ago and he did a little speech on his music being cuss-free and such and it MENT something i remember being really proud for him but that was awhile ago the world has moved on <> cussing doesnt bother me but do i want my 3 year old sayin f-bombs because they heard it in a song ?

Never heard of anybody buying an album for the " cussin'." Lolz. Just make good songs.

It worked out well for Will Smith lol

But seriously what's there to say that hasn't been said already, if its not coming from your heart, Its not real
