I was wondering why people like dj clue and funkmaster flex can be considered dj's. All they do is produce mixtapes, and it seems like any idiot can do that. Is there something I am missing to this? do they remix the tracks or just throw a bunch of songs on a record????

thank you i was wonderin this **** today....i have that dj clue backstage mixtape and all it is is him talkin over the tracks and a bunch of tracks put together.......sorry to bring up old threads jus had to reply to this

yea

i'm glad you bumped it up, no one replied to it. more on the topic, a real dj makes mixtapes that in some way shape or form alter the original tracks, but dj clue's mixtapes are basically the same as if you went to your cd burner and threw some mp3s on a disc. what do you all think?

I'm not a huge fan of the Funkmaster Flex series of mix sets because of all the vocals overlayed by him throughout--the mixing and scratching isn't all that bad though. But I don't know if it's exactly right to say he's not a DJ because he's not remixing each track. Yes it's more of a compilation than a smooth mix, but it kinda goes with the music he's playing on it. I haven't heard much of DJ Clue, but from what you're saying, it's probably about the same.
You're right, anyone could put together a similar set, if you had the equipment and skills that they have on the tables. They also have the fame, which helps the sales of the CDs to people who don't know much about the records.

I HATE dj clue, why does he have to yell REMIX on every track he mixes. It pisses me off so much. Funkmaster flex is decent though, he gets some pretty good songs together.

Word,

It seems as if all Dj Clue does is yell, "THIS IS THE REMIX!" on every track and then disappears until the next track starts where he repeats his words. However, I'm sure he had an actual background where he actually did something but, hey, he's making a lot of money with minimal effort.

I think he was "spinning" in Philly tonight. I was thinking about going just to see what his sets are like, but I thought against it at the last minute and bought ebay records with the money I would have dropped... If anyone went to this, or has seen him live, let me know what he is like.

He probably brings his dj to drop tracks then sets him self up a mic to do the yelling.

As much as I hate DJ Clue........he does a good job promoting his name.....DJ Clue is like a household name nowadays....

as to hardcore DJ's...we consider him as some geek that gets music before everyone else and puts it out way before anyone else does......i don't believe that i've ever heard him make a decent "mixtape"....when i mean mixtape....i mean blending songs in transition and what not.....i'm mean come on...he still rocks that 19" Numark mixer with the 12" cross fader!!..lol

its all about connections nowadays....

as for funkmaster flex.....he is a good DJ...if u ever listen to his mixshows or mixtapes back in the day, you would think the same..... but since all the $$$$ he's makin.....he could care less if anyone thought he sucked or not.....(btw...did anyone check out Flex on MTV....for Celebrity Cars?!?....all that for just playin with plastic all ur life!!!...)

all in all, its all about how u promote ur name......thats y DJ CLUE says his name every 2 seconds on his CD's!!... annoyin as it is.....thats the only way to drill it in peoples minds thinkin that he is that good......artist, producers, and labels recognize this and thats y he gets music before anyone else......

i'm not sayin that u should say ur name or talk throughout ur CD....but understand y Clue or flex do it....

I've experienced both Flex and Clue live.....flex is better live....

dj shy, what kinds of things do these guys do when you see them live? i've seen videos of live qbert and he scratches the whole time but what does a mix dj do in a live performance?

well...i'm a mix/scratch dj.... so mostly mix DJ's are to for parties/clubs........

when i was at a party that clue DJ'ed....he just played new songs...and old school joints right after the other....no real "mixing or blending"....he usually talks before he drops each song.....

Flex does the same thing...but he mixes and scratches alot during a party......

i guess when u watch a scratch DJ....u just sit there and watch what he does........a mix DJ, usually....no one cares what technique he is using or what equipment he's using.....they just care about what song is playin and if u can dance to it....

so which is it.. talking or mixing?

i've seen flex on tv before..never during a real set only some bull**** thing.. But... he never actually mixed... he would just drop tracks.. but although i think he's corny... he did it well, he got the crowd gonig and his cuts were tight.. I can honestly say i have enver heard of clue mixing or cuttin... only hear him scream like a ****ing moron. But flex although i think he's also corny... he showed more skill then clue

Flex mixes and talks.......when i say "mix"...blending 2 songs..etc..

Clue just talks...and talks...and talks...."dessert Storm!!!"..."remix"......"clue clue clue...."......."ha ha!"....."cluemenatitti!!....."

Ya well dj clue is a producer isnt he?
Doesnt he remix tracks with people, if you ever listen to his cd.

Or does he just have someone make tracks with people then yell over em.

Because if he produces them he is doing a very smart thing. Instead of sitting in the back letting the artist he is producing the song for get all the glory, he belts out his name on each track so you know who did the damn thing, getting him a lot of exposure.

Disregard that if all he does is yell, then he is gay.

dj clue needs a savage beating. im so damn tired of him stabbing tracks with his horrible voice yelling... i mean the levels of the song hes playing is usually like half his voice volume... its ridiculous. funkmaster flex was a pioneering dj in his prime and still has the skills to pay the bills so i gotta give respect to him. but clue can eat a fatty. saw this documentary recently on cable bout rock-a-fella tour backstage... all the other rap cats were clownin on clue as the 'funniest lookin n***a in america' or somethin like that. evidently he does do production though... he went back to the bus after they were doggin him and i saw a nice keyboard and a mpc... unless its just for show which is a distinct possibility. he might actually be a halfway decent producer if he didnt shout all over his tracks.

What's even more sorry is how these dj clue/funk masterflex wannabes are acting just like them and funking up the track by imitating them and yelling thru out the track. Annoying *** hell!
Try downloading the NAS - Made you look (remix) or the 50 cent - Wanksta track.

Actually, now that I listen to some of his stuff.
Funkmaster Flex isn't that bad. I actually like some of his stuff, and he doesn't yell.
But i still think Clue sucks.

i think electronica dj's are a lot more talented. i mean, they start off with nothing, and write every piece of music from the bass kicks to the snare part and the guitar part. some of these hip hop mixtape guys just are good at mixing but their writing and composing skills are ****.

DJ SHY: 'Clue just talks...and talks...and talks...."dessert Storm!!!"..."remix"......"clue clue clue...."......."ha ha!"....."cluemenatitti!!....."'

Y-IT EARP: 'im so damn tired of him stabbing tracks with his horrible voice yelling... i mean the levels of the song hes playing is usually like half his voice volume... its ridiculous. '

These two comments pretty much sum up my view on him. I bought two of one of his LPs years ago because I knew the songs were not actually mixed, and I figured that I could have 16 double singles out of two LPs. That is when I really discovered his incessant yacking. The worst is: "New $hit1" over and over. His voice is annoying, and it seems that he does nothing to the tracks but scream. If his name was "wack producer clue" or something other than DJ clue, I might be a little less insulted. Oh well. At least there is now somewhere to vent stuff like this with others. Thanks...
