Digi 002 Console will not work

Every time I turn on the Digi 002, the Scribble Strips light up, but no pixel text pops up.. the mute button lights up and when you press it, it doesn't go away.. and the faders always reset to negative infinity when you move them. I've tried ESC-DISPLAY-REC to reset the device, however, since the scribble strips no longer display text, I have no idea whats going on. Nothing else lights up. I've swapped power cables, changed power outlets, and once I got a "Validating..." message on the console, but then I tried to ESC-DISPLAY-REC reset it and it just went back to the blank strips again...

Currently, I have the console plugged into a UPS that's plugged into a power strip plugged into the wall. The UPS beeps every two minutes for about half a second saying that the power levels fluxuate.

Does anyone have a freaking clue whats going on?

More than likely, this may be your problem. The digidesign hardware and pro tools software had to be used wit a system that is compatiable. Go to the website and see if you computer specs are compatiable with the digi design system you have. If not, you either need a new computer or send it back. But if you already used if before, im guess its not the computer

The computer has nothing to do with it.

If I disconnect a normal Digi 002 from a computer by it's firewire, then the unit will still tell me "Standby..." when you turn it on.

I don't even get that, no matter how I have it plugged in.

Without knowing your setup or signal chain , it's hard to form a judgement but the fact that you mentioned the UPS showing fluctuations tells me you are having surges or spikes or drops in current. Usually an isolator resolves this problem and the UPS is trying to protect your system. Find out what the main power points are doing, if there is any fault in the building's power supply or if anyone is working on the cabling. A similar problem is happening to a friend of mine and he's got some major issues with his landlor's wiring of the apartment he rents.
Failing that, it could be a flaw in the 002. As a test disconnect the 002 and use any other device in the same signal chain and see if the UPS still gives the same readings. Sometimes you get a loop back effect with currents and it will show up if you use something else, if it doesn't then you know it's the 002, if it does then you know it's coming from the mains.
I am assuming everything else is setup correctly.

i know whats wrong with it ...the solution is you should give it to me !

When did you get your 002?

All Digi002 units shipped before a certain date (July 2003 - and that means shipped to the dealer, not shipped to you) were shipped with a defective power harness. Every one. This problem will rear its ugly head sooner or later. And since you're having power supply issues anyway, I'm guessing that this has brought the problem to the fore.

So...

You're registered with Digi, right? Let them know that you're experiencing the power harness problem. Have them send you a new one. it's a user-replaceable part, so you can get your machine up and running by yourself, rather than waiting weeks for a repair center to charge you a bench fee and then never look at it.

That's what I'd do (and have done for some other folks.)

any digi002 unit with a serial number that ends in 'A' or 'B' can have this fault. and as Mr Hoax says above, the fault will become apparent sooner or later on any of these models.. fun :)

This is the correct answer. The situation has been resolved and this was the solution. Thank you.

No problem, brotha; Glad to see that you're up and running again!

Onward and upward...

We've had to repair about 250 of those units since they started shipping...it is definitely the wiring harness. Call Digi and get your replacement.

Peace.

i know you have the problem fixed, but i am just wondering what model you have? i think you were refering to the table top model rather then the rack mounted model, right?

to hoax,or anyone else that knows for that matter, does this error in the harness accure in the 002 rack models? i am thinking of getting one and if that is the case then when i get it i will know what to do...
