Damon Dash Sells Stake In Rocawear For $22 Million In Cash

Damon Dash is severing business ties with formers partners including Jay-Z and is selling his stake in Rocawear back to partners for $22 million dollars.

Rocawear was established in 1999 and has grossed over $500 million dollars since its inception.

The move all but seals any further business dealings between the two former Rocawear/Roc-A-Fella co-CEO’s.

“Rocawear was my point of view, a Harlem swagger," Dash told AllHipHop.com of the sale. "They gave me $30 million and 75% of Team Roc. I'm real happy with the deal. I got $22.5 million in cash and the rest in companies (like State Property, Team Roc, Pro-Keds and other entities)."

Rumors of Dash making an exit from the Roc brand started to circulate shortly after Dash and Jay-Z sold Roc-A-Fella Records in 2004, a venture which they established in 1995

By the late 1990’s, Roc-A-Fella Records was raking in over $50 million dollars annually, releasing hit records by Jay-Z, Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek and others.

In 1997, Island Def Jam bought a 50% stake in the label for $1.5 million. The success helped launch Rocawear and Roc-A-Fella Films in 1999, Dash Films in 2001 and Armadale Vodka in 2002.

The label was sold back to Def Jam in 2004 amid rumors of a rift between Dash and superstar rapper and co-CEO Jay-Z.

The remaining 50% stake in Roc-A-Fella Records was acquired for $10 million dollars, giving Island Def Jam, a unit of Universal, 100 % ownership of the label.

Roc-A-Fella executives had renegotiated their deal with Island Def Jam several years prior to selling the remaining stake for $20 million dollars, bringing the total selling price of Roc-A-Fella to over $30 million dollars.

Dash denied rumors of hostile feeling towards his former business partner.

“When the original Roc-A-Fella broke up, it was time for everybody to do their own thing,” Dash said. “We ain't no *****-ass n***as taking sides. All that **** is petty and
s**t."

While the move marks the end of Dash’s relationship with the Roc-A-Fella brand, Dash is involved in several other high profile ventures.

He holds investments in the Tiret watch company, his film production-company Dash Films, America magazine, State Property clothing, a licensing deal with Pro-Keds sneakers and his record label, Dame Dash Music Group, which is distributed by Island Def Jam.

“Now that I know the business world, I don't need partners,” Dash said. “I got my own connects with the bank."

I dont know why niccas thought it was over for dame after da split. I think Jay will have more problems making business decisions the Dame. Dame is a true east coast hustler. He more than just alot of talk like alot of dem niccas. I ph*cks wit em. Jay too, but Dame fits the role of CEO better than Hov.

its gonna be interesting to see how Dame and Jay fare turn out, from a business standpoint. As of right now it looks like Jay is running Def Jam into the ground, with the exception of Kanye! I see he was reportedly worth $300-350 million which is serious change. I wonder how much Dame Dash is worth right now? Does anyone know?

I think I hear he around 500 mil, but shyte, I cant really call it. He up there tho

Ok I just read Jay-Z is worth $286 million in forbes and Diddy is worth $315. I thought Diddy would've been worth more by now, but **** i'd love to be in his position regardless!

Why do Jim Jones and Cam call themselves the "quarterbillionboyz"
are they worth that 4real? Cuz I cant see it. Specially just not off that nasty azz Sizzurp ish.

Dame is definitely the better businessman and he's loyal to his peeps.Once you're able to deal with his Harlem arrogance, he's the dude you wanna roll with.I am happy that he wasnt left azz out and he has a nice sum of change to work with.

I wonder why they don't dabble in established companies like Starbuck's or McDonalds... you can't go wrong.

I don't think Pro-Keds are ever coming back. How about that RockBox thing and I've never seen Armandale at any parties...

Money makes money though so I guess instead of watching Rock-A-Fella dwindle down to being worth nothing, sell it now.

Dame is a way better biz man Jay will ever be. Jay models his tactics after Dame, well his attempt is not good so far but he'll improve. He's still thinking in the mind frame of a artist too much. That could help but its not proving to be good for him right now. I got faith in Hov though. Dame is sometimes hard to understand what the hell he's talkin about lol.. nigga be speakin in diplomat terms too much lol..

T.I. said he made a quarter mil in the pen getting stock tips!...lol

"Young Fresh til Death" or is it "to Death" is my MF hero and I wana marry his sister.

I aint play'n.

Nygga how the fukk do u know what's going on in Jay's mind? Are u sitting around counting these nyggas' pennies and supermarket receipts? This is why young nyggas should just shut the fukk up and think before spitting some dumb shyt in a thread just to have SOMETHING to say.

And for the record, Diddy is STILL worth more than $500 million dollars. it would be pretty shocking to see that he's lost $150 million in the course over a year. Perhaps the $315 was how much he was worth in cash...not including his stocks and businesses.

That can't be right though because Bill Gates was worth $51 million this year and I KNOW that has to include his stocks.

Good question. Sean John is definitely on the market.

I think Diddy owned Bad Boy entirely at the beginning of the year. Since he's found new distribution with Warner I'm assuming that part of his label is on the market and his half is still privately owned. Beats me, but it makes me wanna up my research skills.

yeah, i want to know now but dont think i have the motivation to find out.

Actually Diddy sold half of Bad Boy Entertainment to Warner for $30 million back in Feb. Diddy became sole owner of Bad Boy after he bought the remaining shares of the company from arista back in 2002. In 2003 the company's worth was listed at $100 million. His company continues to lose value due to poor album sales....who's the last artist to go platinum on Bad Boy??????? Exactly! And last year was the first year Sean John reported losses in earnings, so maybe the company isn't doing as well as he'd like. The bottom line is when you are dealing a such a large scale it is easy to fluctuate tens of millions at a time.

I'm pretty sure Forbes considers stock when figuring the networth of people b/c they have Warren Buffet listed as the second richest person in the world and all of his money has come via stocks.

Osama it's called demographic research and knowing what marketing really is.. I do marketing research on a daily basis so I know what I'm talking about homie.. Why dont you try and think before you talk out of your mouth that has no teeth. I'm not one of these FP members that you try to put on front street playa dont get it twisted.
