In Cubase 5 or previous versions of Cubase, is it possible to record two midi notes on different channels at one time from a VST like Battery 3 or any other program?

ie. I have a usb drum machine with two sounds loaded in Battery 3. On one pad there is a kick, on another pad there is a snare. Am I able to route the kick as track one in cubase, and the snare as track two, so that when I play, both are recorded at the same time, but on different tracks as mentioned above?

If this is possible, then it will speed up my beatmaking process ten-fold.

So you want to record each drum sound using a separate MIDI track?...why?

Anyways, in order for this to work, you would have to be able to assign each PAD in BATTERY to its own MIDI channel...I dont think Battery 3 supports that. Im not in front of my setup, so I cant say for sure.

so that i can record faster.

let's pretend a full song is 16 bars.
instead of recording 16 bars of kicks on track 1
and then
recording 16 bars of snares on track 2
and then
recording 16 bars of hi hats on track 3

I want to be able to be able to record the kick, snare, and hi hat to their corresponding track numbers one time in the 16 bar song.

You seem new to the world of DAWs.

Its not necessary to record each part on a separate MIDI track.

Its easier to record everything on 1 or 2 MIDI tracks and then assign each PAD in Battery to a separate Audio out.
In fact you should setup each of your battery Kits that way to begin with.

At least that's the way I do it.

I like recording drums separately at times so that I can pan and mix levels individually. And if you play live drums and the set is mic'd, you would typically have a set of mics anyway so it makes good sense to me for what he is asking.

That makes sense if you are dealing with audio.

But he is talking about MIDI...As long as he sets each Pad in Battery to a separate AUDIO channel, he can mix each sound individually. It doesn't matter what MIDI channel he triggers them from.

If that's the case, what's the purpose of MIDI channels?

Would mean that's okay to put other VSTs on that one midi channel?
ie. FM7, B3, Halion, etc all recorded on that one midi channel.

I would think that it would be very difficult to go back and fine tune the midi notes if so many of them are jumbled on one midi track..

There seems to be some confusion between a MIDI TRACK and a MIDI Channel...ask yourself what that is, and maybe you will see what im trying to say.

Well, being that its impossible to route multiple VSTIs to the same MIDI Track in Cubase(Not sure if that has changed in the recent version, if it has, forgive me)..your point is moot...It is however possible to route multiple VSTIs to the same MIDI CHANNEL..

load a Battery Kit, create a Midi track in Cubase, and set the MIDI-IN to your Controller and the MIDI-Out to Battery. Now ARM that MIDI track, Hit record, trigger some notes. The resulting MIDI event as capture on the MIDI TRACK, contains notes for Kick, Snare and whatever else you trigger....But you already know how to do that.

Here Is where Im lost as to why you want to record seperate MIDI tracks for each drum you trigger...its not necessary..they all show up on the same MIDI track...

But, I could be totally wrong.

EDIT: Turns out it is possible, still unnecessary IMO, but here you go:

Gotcha, I thought he was referring to midi track and not channels because you would of courseonly have 16 midi channels per midi input or output. At any rate I mainly use outboard gear so I get all the midi notes the way I want prior to tracking to audio.

There is a function in Cubase that will split notes that you record in midi, I might just be called that, Let's say you loaded up an instrument track on your work page loaded battery, played a drum patterns, kick, snare, hat, toms, and some crashes, after you a happy with what you have done, then you can select this function and It will separate all the parts into different midi channels controlling the same VSTi.

don't have my manual here at work, but I've done it before. hope that helps
