Get Native instrument : FM8
and check out some tutorials on youtube on how to make Phat toms on it :)

I thought all an 808 was a drum from a Roland 808 machine without any specific sound, looks like I was wrong, can someone tell me what exactly this is because that would explain Kanye's album title "808s And Heartbreaks". I know that most 808 kicks I've seen are just real deep sub-bass sustaining kicks but yeah, someone want to explain it to me?

hey man ! there is a good 909 emulator you can sound create toms with ! search Drumazon on google ! i create all my drums with it !

808 is the name of the machine that created the original sounds; these are rarer than hens teeth these days, so most folks go with an emulation or a sample set that is limited in scope.

try this for an emulation: KVR: TS-808 by Tactile Sounds - Details

Just to expand on what Bandcoach said, the TR-808 is a drum machine that features 16 different sounds, the term 808 was initially just an abbreviation of TR-808 and so we would often make reference to a sound from the 808 as being an 808 snare, 808 cowbell, 808 bass drum etc, however due to the prevalence of referencing the 808 bass drum newbies abbreviated the term 808 bass drum down to simply 808 ignorant to the fact that such an abbreviation (808) was already in use to refer to the TR-808 drum machine which is not limited to just producing a single sound, so if you ask me what an 808 is I might point to the black drum machine with the colored buttons that sits in the corner of my studio, but the term 808 is more commonly used in reference to just one sound now.

to answer the question you can use whatever synth to make an 808 tom. The main thing to keep in mind is fast attack fast release fast sustain and set decay to taste. Set your LFO to modulate the pitch of the sine wave you are using and tweak to taste. Its very similar to making an 808 kick drum .

thanks for the input everyone. I did actually get fm8 does anyone have the link for a tutorial for fm8 and drums?

small quibble but sustain is about a volume level not a speed, so you should be saying low sustain (meaning small numbers like the attack and release)

Also add just a smidge of noise (pink/white) so that it sounds like there is an explosion of sound when the drum is struck....

both terms work I think. when I think of ADSR i really do think of them as fast or slow either it comes in fast/quickly or it takes a while to kick in. though i think we are on the same page. I also dislike the noise on my toms though that does make them sound more realistic.

I actually wrote LOW (as in volume/amplitude) not slow

otherwise agreed....
