Hey everybody, I was just wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to hear what your recording while your recording it in Cool Edit Pro 2.0. I can hear all the other tracks I've recorded previously, but I would like to be able to hear what I'm recording, While I'm recording it. Does anyone know if this is possible? I would appreciate any help I could get. Thanks,
Pedro:monkey:

welcome to fp.:hello:

Yes its possible, but it all depends on your soundcard settings and how you have the system set up.

I have a HP computer with the standard soundcard that came with it. I dont really care if my quality is that great, because I'm mainly interested in using my computer as a way to record demos, or just save rough ideas. What else do you need to know to solve my problem?

I figured I'd post again just to clear up exactly what I'm looking for. I love Cool edit pro, but when I go to record my vocals, I would like to be able to hear them in my headphones as I record them. I hear all the other tracks, but the track I'm recording does'nt end up coming through the headphones. Is it possible to hear what your recording, while your recording it. I have a HP computer, with the standard soundcard. I use Windows ME. I don't want to spend any money on this system, because I'm saving for a better right now. I just want to be able to hear my vocals in my headphones, as I record them. Does anybody know how this can be done? I'd appreciate any help anyone can give me.:monkey:

go into your master volume ( the bottom right hand corner )
it looks like a bell or something. double click it.
go to options and unmute your microphone...
holla if you need more clarity.

Hey, I checked the master volume setting, and my mic isnt muted. It records fine, I just would like to figure out how I can hear what I'm recording, while I'm recording it.

You have to unmute the microhpone as you already did, and also enabled its volume in the "volume control" or whatever its called.

Maybe I'm not explaining what I'm looking for right. I come from a Live music background. I've been playing in clubs around STL off and on for about 10 years. and always when I played live, or rehearshed, and even in my experience in a couple of studios. I always had my vocals coming through monitors so I could hear myself sing, as I was doing it. So What I was wondering is there anway to have your vocals come through your headphone like a monitor. I know I probally sound like a dumba**, but I know this has to be possible, because I done it before. I just cant figure out how to do it in Cool Edit Pro. Somebody help me before I take a sledge-hammer to this damn machine. Sorry I rambled, Thanks for your help, Pedro

Yeah, I tried what everybody said, but it didnt change anything. I still cant hear my vocals in the headphones while I'm recording them. They record fine, I just cant hear what I'm recording while I'm recording it. This makes it hard for me to really get into my vocals when I cant tell if I sound like crap or not. Anbody got any other ideas? Let me know, thanks for all the help, Pedro

I can't really think of anything else other than unmuting the microphone in the playback properties which you already tried.

I going to try what you guys said again and hope for the best, Thanks for the advice its 4:20 somewhere so I got to go,

I use Cool edit pro 2 like I use soap, and I never had to change any settings to get playback while recording. But it has to be some kind of setting. I will check when I get home in the CEP settings to see if there is one that mutes playback while recording.

I know what you're talking about. Like when you're in the studio and the music is playing, but in your headphones you hear the music, but you also hear your vocals, but you may hear your vocals more in the headphones because your vocals are the main focus.

I too have been wondering this. I'm thinking that you may need a mixer plugged to your soundcard. Do you have a mixer and if so what kind. You and I have the same brand PC so I feel ya.

The only other suggestion that I have is to contact Cool Edit Pro Help because I know that it can be done since it serves as multi-track studio and you do these type things at a studio. ISO try contacting them and see what info they give you.

once again -your soundcard needs to be "full duplex"
if it is then u dont a mixer just make sure ure line in isnt muted on your play options.
peace

My soundcard is "Full Duplex", because according to the Cool Edit help you cant record in multitrack mode unless you have a full duplex soundcard, and I dont have any trouble recording in multitrack veiw so it cant be that. Anybody else have any ideas?

Mixer

Have You tried clicking on the options in the Mixer, going to the properties and changing the " Adjust Volume For" setting to Record (or playback whatever isn't selected)? When the "Show the Following Volume Controls" box changes make sure your microphone or line in is selected and then press ok. Your mixer view should change (it might be very subtle, or it might take up the whole screen). Make sure that whatever line (Line In or Microphone) you are using is selected, and try it from there. It might take some playing around with. Or it could be something you've already tried. It should be something with the soundcard/mixer not cool edit that needs adjustment. You should hear your mic input without cool edit open, just as you can hear your line in. Hope this helps, if not keep trying.
