Compression in electronic music

Hi guys,

I am a drum and bass producer, aspiring to become a professional. I have been making music for about 5 years now and the last year I have basically just been practicing mixing, hardly finishing any tracks. While I have become much better at it, there are stll some things I am not quite sure about.

When it comes to bass and kicks, I tend to compress them because the volume for the bass varies to much from high to low notes, is that a bad thing? Should I not be compressing too much? Sometimes I end up compressing alomost every track in my daw, because I can't get the volumes right.

What are your experiences with compression? How do you use it and what do you use? I also tend to use NY compression a lot, is there a good alternative to it?

Thx!
