Chords help

Hope you all had a good Christmas and new year.

I have just learnt all 12 major triad chords. are these chords used much in progressive house or do I need to learn minor chords more??

Also why do some songs have a 7th chord? And others just use triads?

I'm enjoying learning chords and want to know more!

For progressive house I think the majority is major, but learning minor chords is not that difficult (It's just where the half steps fall in the chord) and I definitely recommend learning it. As for the seventh it is because adding it not only adds variation but if you add it to a five chord it will lead to the one chord stronger.

Hope I answered your questions.

in prog house you might hear

G--G--G--Bb--Bb--Bb-C--C--C-Eb--Eb--F- and cycling through again and again; progression is I-bIII-IV-bVI-bVII

G ~ G-B-D
Bb ~ Bb-D-F
C ~ C-E-G
Eb ~ Eb-G-Bb
F ~ F-A-C

7ths are extensions that colour the chord further

major 7th 1-3-5-7 (usually occurs on chords I and IV)
dom 7th 1-3-5-b7 (used mostly for chords that are functioning as chord V in the progression)

so in the above you might get

G7--G7--G7--Bb7--Bb7--Bb7-C7--C7--C7-Eb7--Eb7--F7- and cycling through again and again; progression is Idom7-bIIIdom7-IVdom7-bVIdom7-bVIIdom7

G7 ~ G-B-D-F
Bb7 ~ Bb-D-F-Ab
C7 ~ C-E-G-Bb
Eb7 ~ Eb-G-Bb-Db
F7 ~ F-A-C-Eb

note that we must identify the dom7 function to eliminate ambiguity with major 7 for chords I and IV
