"Chasing Placements"

i got more work and more money when i stopped caring about placements lol, i just make music

so much more ways to make money then just submitting for an album that only has a 20% chance of coming out

^ that i agree with - but at the same time would you say you put yourself in a position to get a placement if it happened to come your way

I'm still not sure which way I want to go. My main aim is a songwriter, but I also have a lot of tracks for which I have no lyrics.

I'm leaning more towards creating two identities. One for SoundClick or some leasing site and one for my songs.

So two brands if you will.

No it's the right angle Troup, reputation-wise.

If I met the CEO of McDonald's I could say "Man that guy knows how to sell burgers..." if I met the steakhouse owner I could say "Man that guy knows how to make a good steak eating experience".

With the superproducer you're supposed to get both facets, but more often than not you get "That guy has sold burgers before let's go with him" and then you get the over-processed, fly-by-night, color-by-numbers *insert phrase for lack of care*, production that was made because the producer has let his burger-selling power get to his head and has ignored the "great steak eating-experience".

*Phew* What are we talking about again? lol I'll finish my thought later when I'm uninterrupted.

Now I'm hungry...?

LMAO. I understand what your trying to say...but your analogy is a big WTF? As a former chef I suggest changing your analogy around. No one really goes to a restaurant for the experience INITIALLY. The quality of the food is what draws people in THEN the experience (Decor, Customer Service, etc) is what makes people stay and or return.

There was a time when "placements" were lucrative. There's a few of us up here who have got $10-15k for a track or 2. $5k a few times, but be real with yourself. I got 3 "placements" already set for 1st quarter 2010. Nothing big, but I never do anything big(Still Major). Don't expect to see much from any of these guys.

As said earlier. At this point, placements are like proof of credibility. Nothing else. I still take them, but I make more of mixing and mastering for guys off the net and running the studio out my crib for nobodies than I expect to ever make off another "placement". I don't even need "placements" to display my works at this point, lol. Locals f**k with me because I have the best sound out here and I'm "cheap" cause I run out my home.

Best advice I can give you in today's market is find artists you have faith in, produce them, and shop their music. We're in the time of fly by artists. A GS Boyz credit is nothing today, but it was omething just a few months ago. A year later it will be "you produced for who"? Apply that to any current artist(other than maybe Gaga or Rihanna). And anyone with a name already(State Property, Slaughterhouse, G-Unit, Grand Hustle, DTP, ect.)haven't fended well enough with the times to care to try anymore.

Find your own lanes, no one can help you when they can't help themselves. You don't keep working for a boss as his company goes under and he loses everything. You take the skills you have and go apply at a place of employment that can actually pay you.

There seems to be this stigma around here that 'chasing placements' is lost cause. I may be wrong. Someone clarify - share your thoughts on this.

I think chasing placements is well worth the time and effort put in, My biggest advice to everyone is get out and network, dont think your going to blow up off the internet, it is possible but def alot less of a chance then if your out in the networking getting your name out

I am also up for leasing to no names all over the internet, Its a good way to make revenue until you get your foot in the door & can afford to do nothing but seek placements.....

other wise if you have no hopes and dreams of making placements and only working with no names then your business is :monkey: business and I guess music is your hobby and your not looking to make it your career

i guess you didn't read the post directly above yours...

nah I read it, thats cool & all, he is running a legitimate business, running a studio.....thats alot different then being a producer or beat maker who has no other goals then just leasing beats....

I mean there are alot of dudes making mucho dinero from leasing, but I dont think if you ask 1 of them there going to say hell no I dont want any major placements.....

I respect anyone who is living off there music *edit*.....Living comfertably

just my opinion though

I dont chase placements I chase independant cats been doin so for a minute. The internet is the future but I will submit to major artists especially if I enjoy their music. But no I am not going to chase down any labels artists to get jerked around

Imo.... ANY money you can make off of your music is a plus... no matter were it comes from.

So the dude selling $20 leases from having a song file sit out on the web while he eats dinner > than the dude that's not selling $20 leases and has beats on his hard drive that aren't doing anything.

If he sells 5 leases a day, how hard did he really have to work after he created the beat? If I had the "time" I'd put my beats on every beat selling site I could find in order to try to increase my chances of leasing / selling something... not just SoundClick.

... that's if I had the time... lol.

(Please don't quote this if you just want to try to start an e-fight...)

Getting ur foot in the door is fine...

But what's on the other side of that door that ur trying to get your foot into?

I'm chasing brand value...and there are many ways to make that happen.

excellent post

Locals f**k with me because I have the best sound out here and I'm "cheap" cause I run out my home.

do you charge everybody that you provide your services (studio time) to?

and if you don't charge everybody, how do you determine who you charge for you work and who you don't charge???

mev, aint you the dude who took sounds from another well known kit & sold them as your own in your own drum kit? lol

Like a lot of people said...

Now you can make your own placements, everything is being sold on the web... and you have access to the web.

I think the only place you'll get outdone is in the promo and marketing dept.

It's kind of crazy because labels like No Limit and Cash Money and artists like E40 and Too Short were making lots of money out of the trunks of cars... a trunk is not nearly as big as the web... (but I guess there weren't as many people selling around them either)

.... one thing I don't like though, is people who try to sell me CD's on the street... I just don't like it, lol. Wait until Jay Z or Kanye come to town and sell 'em in the parking lot of their show, lots of rap fans will be there. Don't bother me while I'm trying to pump my gas.

(You don't have to quote this or comment on it, resist)

Another reason why I don't buy drum kits and I post drum kits for free.

I don't knock the anybody hustle. If you're good at selling drum kit then do what you do.
