Tricky you have the right to feel this way, and besides you are completely right.
IMHO it's the people that say only TT dj's are real dj's, are arrogant. As if it doesn't take skill to mix on something different. No way. I thought dj'ing was about playing music. So I don't mind to spin on CD's, MD's, MP3's, K7 or anything else, as long as you play the music, you're a dj.

All the big name dj's like Tenaglia and Cox play cd's too. So, now you know they do, are they crap dj's suddenly? I think not. It's all about the music, the media you use is only a way to achieve your goal.

It's probably been said before and I'm too lazy to read this whole thread.

Why does it always have to be TT vs. CD?! People are looking at it the wrong way. CDs should be seen as another DJ tool. When cooked food was 'invented', were people arguing if hot food would take over cold food? Noway. Its a preference/seperate skill.

I would like to get at least one CDJ1000. Just because I have a BUNCH of songs on CD, which I can't find on vinyl, that I would like to spin.

Don't get it twisted

As i said b4...it is a matter of "preference"!!!!
in the "electronic" world it is more accepted...i come from a different genre to most people on this thread and i grew up listening/watching "cutmaster swift/grandmaster flash/terminator X/Dj Skratch/Pete Rock/Dj Premier/Q-bert/Roc Raider etc etc"
these are what you call Dj's.
I resent being called "closed minded" as i am far from that, just because i'm going aganist the norm in this thread ppl wanna try and blast me???
In "your world" it is all about the music and i accept that...but in my corner it takes more than it...it is about putting on a show...showing ppl the skills that have taken you half of your life to learn.
You wanna call yaselves DJ's then go ahead(who am i to stop you???)
But it seems that people get all defensive when this topic rears it's ugly head???...is it because they are still fighting for this to be accepted???
there is room for all, but this is what i think....4give me for speaking my mind

peace.:)

No problem - I can see that :)
The trouble is that still if you master a typewriter, It is a matter of time before the PC replaces it... You can't cling on to it just because it was harder to learn 'back in the old days' I understand it is hard to let it go but DJ'ing is still not concidered to be an retro artform ;)

Could you tell me your definition of a DJ?

Who cares if something isn't accepted or not? Thats like the whole "mainstream" thing. People are all worried about liking certain music if its mainstream. Vinyl is mainstream in the DJ world, why aren't people bashing it and running for the CD TTs? Heh..

me aganist the world

i given my definition already..i gave 8 and there are sh.tloads more!!!
i understand tech moves on and i don't consider wax Dj's to "retro artform".i'm not clinging to anything except my opinion to this subject.
we from diff genres so we look for diff things...i get down like the next man and fuk up the tables like the next man as well....i have to check this Cd thing further and see what it's got to offer.
it's not "hands on" and that is the bottom line..can't get from that.
it's like learning to play the violin and learning to program loops...it's still music but considered different...all my saying is that i know who i would respect more

peace.
:)

I kinda agree w/ flareward, If i see a DJ in a club and they're using CD's I loose a little respect for them, that doesn't mean it's not DJing, it just kinda feels a little false. DJing essentially is being a Disc Jockey, ie spining discs, and forgive me if i'm wrong, but last time i looked, CD stood for compact disc!

I've never actually seen a CDJ who knew how to mix using the equipment, I know they exist, but most of the clubs where i live are cheesy pop-tastic jail-bait fests where your more than likely gunna be ID'd for being too old, This sort of situation is ideal for the CDJ's of the world, cause the kiddies aren't gunna mind if the musics not mixed, which gives the balding old codger in the booth more time to eye up the little girls and their short skirts and the type of music played is rarely released on vinyl format anyway. Most decent music, whatever your style, is released on vinyl, and if you don't believe that then you can stick to britney and n sync.

Raarrr! I'm angry! and i've lost the point i was trying to make! :p

On Saturday night, I DJed at a house party from 9pm to 4.30am, now, if it wasn't for the CD player we borrowed from someone i would have run out of tunes before long, (I also wouldn't have been able to enjoy the evening properly! ;) ) so I agree they do have their place.

Also there's something about vinyl thats just better, it feels like the music's soul has actually been pressed onto the wax as well as the tune, it sounds more natural than CD's.

I use vinyl for music and CD's for convience, and lets face it, DJing isn't about convience.

At least it could be said that your view is at least as subjective as any others :D

Okay, so after reading my post i realise it was an incoherant babble, but i'm using my computer at work so, hey, what can ya expect when your boss is wandering around! :D

What i was trying to say is that CD's have their place in the DJing world, as does any technology that aids the DJ, but I, personally, feel that CD's are a convience thing, a way of listening to music with out having the bother of cueing up the next track, or poncing around with EQ's etc, I record alot of my vinyl onto Minidisc, in the same way i burn CD's with tracks from other CD's; for convience. Because i cant be arsed to keep swapping records etc. If i want to mix, i use my vinyl. If i want to listen to an album, I prefer the sound of vinyl, but the convience of CD's is too inviting.

I think the argument that CD's are more available is completly inacurate. More vinyl is produced now that there ever has been, and at least everyone here has access to the internet. I buy most of my music from independant record shops and direct from the label. Lets face it, if you go to a highstreet shop to get music, your gunna only get reconstitued bile aimed at the masses with no taste (why is spam [as in the meat substiute] so popular?), if, like me, you prefer the backstreets, your gunna find some interesting, inteligent music, that actually means something other that a quick way to get more cash. I think my signature says it all!

Also, most of the new inovative CD players i see are all aimed at emulating a turntable. whats the point? It's never going to be like one without being one. I came up with an idea for DJing with MP3s, but it was using an existing turntable for controlling the track.

But then i am a scratch DJ so i s'pose i'm biased

I think it's a matter of preference, I have TT's and happy with it. Going to a club and watching a DJ use TT's is far more exciting that seeing someone hidden behind a CDJ rack. Yes, it's mostly a matter of music, but the performance is important aswell imho.

Ok, what about a Dj using a combination of 2 to 3 decks, a laptop with Mp3 mixing software, sampling software and sequencing software, and maybe a CD deck too. Is that cool or is that DJ lame too? Just wondering...

Guess that would be cool thanks to all the gadgets, but still the nicest thing is two or three technics turning those records. There's something mystical about TT's (especially Technics) when the light hits the speed-dots in the dark dj booth corner and shines over the crowd. Maybe it's just me...

CRAP! ATTENTION!!! ABOVE POST IS A JOKE

hey man, this post was not intended to make anyone laugh. but, on the other hand, i find it quite funny that CD even got any votes. sure CDs are giving DJs more to work with and might have some unique features, but i mean... c'mon, CD over vinyl???? no way in.... :D

Everyone keeps mentioning that Tenaglia and other DJs spin CDs. This may be true, but they still spin primarily on vinyl. If you've ever seen Carl Cox live- you would know that he is most entertaining when using TTs.

I find there is just something great about manipulating vinyl. It is great to be able to physically manipulate sound, and to glance at a record and know exactly when a breakdown is coming.

my sig refers to my posts, not yours, hense why it appears on all my posts, not just the ones after yours.

ok, now people don't understand this now, so i will change my disclaimer so it is easy to understand.

and your thread didn't make me laugh, it made me say "CRAP!"

I go with vinyl, cause it has better sound quality. Its the difference between Solid State and Valve in guitar amps. New does not equal better, the best can never be improved (1200's).
