Yeah. As long as your DAW has a mixer and some basic plugins (EQ, reverb, compression, etc.) you can get a great mix. I personally use FL and get great feedback on my mixes.

So when compressing how much should i upwards compress with the gain knob?

Not 100% sure what you are referring to. What plugin are you using? If you're compressing, I'd leave the gain knob alone until you're ready for make up gain.
When you begin to hear ducking, you can pull back on the compression or adjust the attack and release
