Best way to diversify drum patterns?

In all of my songs, I spend time making my synths as textured and detailed as possible. But when it comes for adding complexity to the rhythms and timbre of my drums, I don't know where to start.

What do you guys do to mix up your drums in your track?

Depends on the genre a lot. Drums are really tempo dependent.

Some people take sampled drum fills, tom rolls etc from breaks which is a good standard thing to do

Dnb is good at drum fills- they tend to change the pattern to a more syncopated one and put FX on: phaser is common, filtering is pretty common, I've heard automated bitcrushers used to good effect.

House/techno fills are very simplistic, just add/remove one kick/hi-hat/clap at the end of each section

The answer is simple. Switching up the drums.
Can be anything.
After all, they are just instrument parts.

And the categories is just the pieces.
Fills
one shots
uh...trills etc just rhythm pieces
