I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge or experience of musical artists who would not let a sample of their music be sampled and used?

I can't remember hearing a Prince or Diana Ross sample. So I'll throw them on the list

Beatles. In a way, cos if you sample them and want the sample cleared, they want like 100% of publishing.

^^that's retarded,

That's why your work will be forgotten.

well, actually, you would have to go through Michael Jackson for permission to use a Beatles sample since he controls the Beatles' masters. have fun with that...another artist who I know was against people sampling their work was the late James Brown. He was disgusted by rappers who sampled his grunts and shouts in their songs.

those guys that Just Blaze sampled for Fabolous' "Breathe." Remember Just said that they wanted 100 g's for the track plus all the publishing, cuz they thought that they wouldn't get it. but fab put the money up, so they cleared it.

so i gues they do let u sample their ****, but really, is it worth it?

MJ doesn't own the full rights anymore, he had to sell like 50% of those. EMI controls the shiznit right now, and they were the ones mad at danger mouse over the "grey album".
And oh yea, Paul McCartney owns right for Buddy Hollys work so that's out of the question too.

Uhh....

I think the 'Breathe' original is by Foreigner. And as far as the Lord Tariq and Peter Gunns joint, them dudes blew it and didn't clear the 'Black Cow' sample before that record got huge. I also know of an underground group in LA that got approached by an attorney for a Steely Dan sample on an album that only had 2,000 copies pressed. Some clown played 'name that sample' in an album review is how they got found out. So, I figure they ain't fans of the process. Also, before he passed Rick James (RIP) hated that shiz. He called it 'stealing' in every interview I ever saw. I think whoever hates on sampling has to be somebody savvy enough to have somehow ended up with control of their publishing/licensing. Otherwise, it doesn't matter what they think, it will be negotiated anyway. Bottomline here, it's not always up to the artist entirely whether a sample can be used or not. The publishing game has gotten pretty twisted over the last 10 years or so. Good question though, some research is definitely in order here.

I know ABBA first gave permission only in 1996 to the Fugees. The second time was in 2005 for one of Madonna's songs. As far as i know thats it...

everyone can be sampled..you just need to agree to their terms....is you sample look to give up at least 40% or more of your publishing...so you might noe be gettin any publishing for the song with the sample on it..
