I heard this is a breakthrough mixer for some awkward reason. Its supposedly extremely nice to work with.

Actually American DJ has a good reputation with working mobile djs. Their dual deck cd players are some of the most reliable built to today. I've almost never seen them break and im around them all the time. I cant say that even for Pioneer or Denon. (and i've owned both, repaired both)
I've played with the mixer for an hour and its fun piece of gear. The effects are clean sounding and allow you not only do beat synced effects but control all the parameters and then save them to memory (there are some fun Presets already included, they sound surprisingly good..almost as good as my red sound efx presets). The FX fader depth control is fun to use with the delay cause you can do some alomst beat juggling sounds with it and control the depth of the other effects, like filter and flange. The only thing i dont like about the FX is the way you have to toggle through the beat times, i would have preffered direct access buttons but then again i was spoiled bv the djm-600. The x-fader is adjustable for crabbing and i know they last for a good period of time, not PVC long time but longer than crappy non-VCA Numark faders do. I do wish the line toggle switches were stronger. Sound wise its clean sounding, not terribly warm like a Rane but don't confuse it with a gemini. The coolest part is the rubber molding, it has a great feel to it and would look awesome at home with a pair of dn-s5000s and mk5gs. Its not Rane or Pioneer but its certainly more worth your money if your inteding to buy a djm-500 for the features, let alone anything by gemini or that new behringer djx-700. Id rather have this.
My only suggestion, find one and play with it. Like i said its not rane, but its not junk like gemini. It's well-built, middle range gear and its a viable substiution for the djm-500 feature-wise IMO.

Chrispy, have you ever plugged an American Audio mixer into a decent sound system and turned it up? If yes, did you like what you heard? I have and I can tell you that it was one of the more unpleasant sound experiences I have ever had, only rivalled by a Citronic mixer.
If they have solved the huge problem with their mixers making speakers sound like they're covered in tin foil and wet towels, then I'm willing to give it a shot. It could be a good mixer, stranger things have happened.

I used a lot of gear from Pio, Numark, Gemini, Ecler, Rodec, Freevox, LEM, and Chesley, (just to name a few) and only Ecler Sclat is better in neutrality and SNR ratio than the Commander Plus...

3-4 years ago, ADJ mixers sounded like **** (minus the commander). Thier cd players completely sucked. It was only until 3 years ago really their audio products started to get good.
Since then ADJ has really turned itself around and unfourtunatly they really dont have the flashy product development like Denon or Pioneer to get past thier bad start. Espesially since they make such middle of the road gear. However, they have developed a growing but reliable customer base outside of the limelight of hard-core club djs and they sell mostly simple dual deck cd players and 19'' rack mount mixers to working mobile jocks.
Turning up a system with a basic American Dj mixer your will hear several things. It won't sound "Rane-warm" but it will sound very clear albeit lacking in any sort of signature quality. ADJ mixers dont subtract anything, but they dont add much (minus the Q-spand mixer which has a WOW SRS built-in which adds a nice boost for mobile sound systems). For alot of people they consider this a good thing cause it allows them to use external processing to liven up thier mix the way they like it, i personally would rather have fluffy, Rane warmth. ADJ mixers don't sound so good thrown into full-blown clipping since they use such middle grade ICs, but any mixer has problems with that. I would best label them as "transparent but not hollow".
More importantly they take a good beating, these mixers are tossed around by middle-aged wedding jocks, cleaned NEVER and bounced around from place to place 4-5 nights a week. Club tough? They are Mobile tough.
