K, so I am ashamed to not know this very well. Someone tried to explain this to me before but never got the idea. Can someone explain this to me? There was a site the had audio examples and such...but it did not do much...plus, I was really not trying to understand. Any help would be great..

Spending pretty much of my life listening to electronica of all kinds I should know better....but no...heh

I believe the amen breaks refer to the world's most sampled drumloop in drum n' bass. If I remember correctly if was sampled from a track titled "Amen " and something.. :)

the 'amen' is the name for a drum break sampled from the classic track Amen brother by the winstons, u can download it from a lot of places, although i am yet to find a real crisp copy.
Classic amen tracks Babylon-splash
most ray keith tunes, check renegade-terrorist
The Amen track- Capone(dillinja) well theres 100s in fact try www.breakbeat.co.uk and goto the listens section youll probabley be able to find a few tunes there with ridiculous cut up mashed up amens

Here's a few samples from the original song 'Amen My Brother' by the Winstons:

Sample 1
Sample 2

The second cut is just the drummer... you won't be able to get a clean cut from the original so just make your own...

O.K. cool thanks for the input...I have a better idea now.

Just curious becuase most people I talk to do not realy like them. I guess if you looking for them they can get annoying...apparently they are sampled/used also.

@ siv, that helped a lot thanks.

Anytime dude.

You may find that people don't like amens 'cause they are overused. Also, some people break the beats up so much that the tune looses rhythm. There are lots of nice mellow old tunes with nice rolling amens that are lovely. And there are some nasty hard ones that also kick arse. It's when the producer tries to be too clever with the beat and chops it up all over the place that it gets messy...

I'll dig out some examples...

wicked track the lemon d remix of future cut - whiplash (bit repetive this one)

another dillinja track under the guise of capone

http://breakbeatlounge.ch/soundz/respect.ram

another ray keith tune, this time a remix of Suvs Closer
someone nicked my copy of this bstd
http://breakbeatlounge.ch/soundz/closer.ram

Enjoy!!!!

The sound quality on these is very poor but trust me the originals are very good, when u can feel those basslines and really hear the inticate beat programming,
maybe someone can come up with some cleaner links?

@ deejaymarky: Wicked!!! Thanks!!!

O.K. another question...are amen breaks only really big in D & B? Or can they be in house, trance...etc?

use an Amen loop on top of a house beat and it's gonna sound like Bentley Rhythm Ace, and I'm pretty sure that's not something you want.

Plus, in order to get it to fit on a 120-130bpm beat, you'd have to chop up and time stretch the original sample so much it's gonna lose the groove (it's almost 180bpm).

120 bpm? The log I saw next to the sample said ~180bpm... guess I got fooled then, having never (gasp!) heard the original.

you will also find it in car commercials!! another tune to use it old skool hip hoppers mantronix on their track king of the beats

its not a perfect 4/4 sample so its not going to be an accurate reflection of the songs tempo

in other words you cant always tell a songs tempo from a sample.... it all depends on wether the sample is a neat 4/4 snip....

and also... some grooves are played double time.... dont forget that... we're talking about BREAKs after all.... they are the BREAKS in the music....

well the song is in 4/4 but the sample usually is sampled so you only can get 3 out of the 4 measures.

my slice of amen...

(Someone wanna give me some comments on that?)
