Just starting to get into electronic music for the first time and was looking for a program that allowed me to make music with my computer and keyboard. Looking to create loops, use preexisting loops, nothing too complicated. Just recently bought acid music 2.0 and unfortunately I'm not able to create my own loops (no wonder it's $60 with a $20 rebate). Can anyone recommend an inexpensive program out there that will allow me to get my feet wet?

Yes

ACID is a good WAV sequencer, but as you noticed, you can't really "compose" anything. It is good to build your mix after you compose loops outside of it.

okay.. I think you will love those programs:

. rebirth 2.0
. reason 1.0

they are very easy to use,a nd you can compose your own stuff. basically they are virtual synthesizers with built-in pattern based sequencers to compose your notes. Check out Reason, it is particularily hot.

There are a million program sout there, but those are good to focus on, especially if you are starting.

Post if you need more infos
by the way... WELCOME TO ONLINEDJ.COM! :D

what about Mixman Studio and Mixman Pro? I was thinking about getting Mixman pro for similar to what wapaneserocker was talking about...

Mono one is right on the ball, Rebirth or even better if your PC can handle it would be "Reason" both sound great and cost a hella lot less then an actual synthasizer. another program you might want to look at is Fruity Loops, it lets you creat your owen drum beats, and you can import thousands of drum hits to use that either you make or download to creat great drum loops with.
Acid is a great program, but is really used as a wav sequencer as Mono one has just explained. so take the loops you creat in these other programs and creat your composition in acid.

as for Mixman studio, I have not used this myself, I'm pretty sure all you can do is play with and maybe sequence wav loops, so thats not what your looking for. if I'm wrong please someone jusmp in and let me know though.

heh man my name is MANO not mono :)
Great comments man, I love this forum :D:D:D

You should probably try out fruityloops. Their new version is pretty sweet and has almost everything you need in it for simple production purposes, from a sampler to a synth to a sequencer.

AVOID MIXMAN LIKE THE PLAGUE

In response to your question about getting Mixman, I respond as follows. I started out with Mixman and eventually brought Acid 2.0. Once I had Acid, I never touched my Mixman Studio Pro again. I did keep it installed for awhile in order to use the effects studio, but as I acquired more software programs, I found I just didn't need Mixman anymore.

I found Mixman to be a non-user friendly software program. Its interface is too complicated given the simple task for which it's actually designed. Acid is much better at giving you straight forward results with less guess work. It should be said, however; Mixman is designed for mixing on the fly via your keyboard, and this is something which Acid cannot do, but then again, even though Mixman is designed for performing on the fly, I never thought it carried out that task very well. I know it sounds like I'm bashing Mixman, and to Mixman fans I apologize, but what I'm really saying is that for me, Mixman just didn't cut it. However, there are those who swear by it and actually like the program.

Oh, I forgot to mention that Mixman had pretty lousy technical support as well ( lol ).

I guess it's just my opinion that Acid is more professional, but to really make good use of it, I'd consider getting a good wav editor like Steinbergs Wavelab which got a rating of 9 in the UK's Computer Music Magazine. Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge 4.5 did not score as high. I have both of them and I'd have to agree that Wavelab seems to perform better. Although, I must admit that I love them both.

Again, this is just my opinion and I'm not trying to step on anyones toes. Ultimately the software you marry is yours for life, so make sure you'll be happy waking up to him... uh her...

Peace... Digitus out...
