Pun was one of my favorite MC's ever. line for line, i think he was the illest to touch the mic... ever!

unfortunately, his time in the spotlight was so limited that only a small group of fans can remember him, and because of that, his name is hardly ever mentioned anymore.

the man was a sensation. first of all, his appearance caught everybody by surprise. he was huge! although his weight lead to his early demise, it was also a major factor in his rise to stardom. then, was his rhymin ability. to this day, i haven't met anyone that's listened to pun, man, woman or child, who doesn't say that he was nice. some people might not like him, but they still can't front on the skills. and on top of that, he had one of the biggest singles in the late 90's (Still Not A Player.) he also had the support of the latin community, and he repped them hard.

i seriously think that if Pun would have lived, he would've been a major contender for the crown of NY.

in less than a year he was on over 40 tracks! and it wasn't just people in NY, or all underground cats, or whatever. it was a really diverse range of entertainers. he did tracks with underground NY cats like Big L, DITC, Cormega, KRS ONE, the Beatnuts, and Nature, to more Mainstream NY cats like Nas, Raekwon, The Lox, Ruff Ryders, Busta, pretty much anybody from the rotten apple. he also wasn't afraid to go outside of his home territory, doinsongs with down south rappers like Mr. Serv On from No Limit, Mid West spitters like Krayzie Bone, to West Coast heavy weights like Mack 10 & Ice T. he was on mad R&B remixes including BRandy's Sittin on Top of the World, and showin his latin roots on Ricky Martin's Livin La Vida Loca remix. Pun was everywhere. he also helped Jenniffer Lopez kickstart her singing career, brought a little shine back to Naughty by Nature, and tried to get more latin singers to break through in the mainstream (remember Veronica?)

Pun's first album Capital Punishment was a masterpeice. he's one of the few rappers to become a legend off one album. first Latin solo rapper to go Platinum. appeared on damn near every remix, compilation, and soundtrack. all in the span of 2 years.

i still remember the first time i hear "i'm not a player," i couldn't believe how hard this new mother****er i never even heard of was just spittin words out like it was nothing.

Rip. I didnt realize today was 8 years. Damn. And yes Capital Punishment is a classic. Its in my 10 top must have hip hop albums of all time.

That Rza produced joint is nasty. Thats my first time hearing it. I never understood why Im not a player or Punish Me weren't singles off Captial Punishment tho. Imo Im not a player was better than still not a player and Punish Me is my favorite Pun song of them all

actually I'm not a Player was his first single. it just didn't take off. i didn't post the vid cuz it was censored, but here it is:

Def one of the best ever to do it.

Also it was Jay Dee's birthday on the 7th too.

RIP

"Dead in the middle of little italy, little did we know, that we riddled some middlemen that didn't do diddly."

Illest few lines in the history of the known universe.

one of the best to ever to touch a microphone. Underated legend. Him and Biggie had a lot in common, yet seems like Pun never gets the mention he deserves.

One of the best produced albums I've ever heard I'd put it up there with Illmatic plus it ain't short on lyricism. I remember when I first heard Capital Punishment I was doing homework at my ex's house and was amazed at how crazy Puns flow was. When I was mixing years ago I put on the acapella to Leather Face over Nas' Made You look beat and came up with something good. Two of my best mixes were to his songs. Puns definitely one of my influences as an MC it really is too bad he's not here. You really have to wonder how New Yorks rap scene would be if he were here. Terror Squad would be in a lot better position than it is now and who knows what a battle between him and 50 would have been had that beef taken off. R.I.P. Chridtopher "Big punisher" Rios.
