Does no one really know this, or is this just really a stupid question?

Cause I'd really like to know... and google isn't being my friend right now.

Counterpoint vocal simply means a vocal that has different but complimentary melody.

Traditionally, Vocal counterpoint is a discipline in music where you learn to harmonise melodies by writing another melody that has more notes in it.

Modern Vocal counterpoint tends to be aimed at writing parts that have fewer notes than the main melody to avoid creating too much melodic and rhythmic congestion. Generally, the counterpoint part will use parts of the lyric, as an effort to emphasise the main lyrical theme of the verse or chorus.

One example that is obvious is the parts in Scarborough Fair by Simon and Garfunkel.
