Should I giveup my dream of being a rapper?

I started chasing this hip-hop dream a year ago. I went through many styles and I went back to the drawing board many times and I've think I've found who I am as a musician but basically I can't gain any traction as a rapper. Is it because I'm irrelevant in this modern age of rap? You see my style is old school hip-hop, what some would call real hip-hop and I think because of that, the fact that I'm white, and the fact that no one understands what I'm trying to say makes no one care to listen. I've grown up in poverty my whole life so I don't have that good of equipment and I can't get studio time and maybe the whole combo is the reason I have no fans. I don't know what to do and I'm just thinking of packing it up and giving up. Do guys have any enlightenment or stories you can share that'll maybe give me hope that I can at least make a stable career with this rap thing?

That's the beauty of the internet. If you don't have the equipment, look online on sites like this one, reverbnation, soundclick etc etc and search for artist or producers close to your area, hit them up and try to network

I've tryed that time and again and I think when he producer hears my white voice they immediately turn away without giving the song a chance. I deleted every song I've made so far and I'm just totally lost in what to do next as an artist. Should I make a mixtape or not, should I work over other rappers beats or my own. I just don't know anymore. I think I just need direction.

How about I give y'all an example track in a few days and you judge it and be as unbias as possible. Tell me how I'm doin as a rapper and what I need to improve on. I bet that'll help me set the path straight.

to be honest, i can't even tell you which direction to go because i haven't heard any of your material, therefore i can't discern whether people are turning away because of your white voice (which I doubt) or maybe you have a weird sounding voice, or maybe your lyrics are whack, or maybe the sound quality sucks, or maybe the beats are whack or don't fit to your rapping style or what you are rapping about, we have no way of knowing until you post something on here and ask for honest feedback, you will definitely get it if you ask, than you build from there

Eminem!!! Not to many rappers are born into wealth so you're not alone. The key is to understand the fact that many famous rappers today didnt become rappers overnight. Their work ethic and the ability to perservere is what sets them apart. There are many talented rappers that never made it because they gave up. It make take 10 years of rejection and no pay. Aspiring artists need jobs on the side to survive until they make it as well as finance their dreams. You have to invest in yourself before others will. The great thing about the internet today is you can eliminate the record label and distribute your music digitally to your fans. Your gonna have to slowly build up your fanbase by making songs fans like so have patience with yourself and the whole process. That's what they call "paying your dues" If Lil B can develop a fan base talking about nonsense with that terrible delivery, anything is possible these days. Also be real to yourself and see if maybe your music is too depressing. Make it interesting. DMX had mad issues but he didnt feel sorry for himself. He made it entertaining to the fans. Here's part of an article I got from greenlabel.com talking about the advantages of the internet for artists today:

Now, artists can do their own promotion on social media, whether it’s announcing new projects, shooting the breeze with fans, or even soliciting more followers by offering new music as a reward. The amount of interaction fans have with their idols is unprecedented, and it can only lead to bigger opportunities for artists, no matter how locally or internationally renowned. One example of promoting through interaction came from Brooklyn rapper Talib Kweli’s Twitter just weeks ago when he offered a pair of headphones to one lucky fan who decided to retweet his message.

Here's the entire article.

^This about sums it up.

Go ahead and give up your dream. People give up dreams all of the time. Just make sure you do something else sensible with your life.

Just be yourself. 1 year is a short amount of time to establish yourself in any profession. It's not easy to make it in this industry because its a lot of people that want to do the same thing that your doing. If you want to make a real name for yourself keep working. Post videos on YouTube. Get people to watch your videos and before you know it, you will have a fan base. There are millions of people in the world just because a 100,000 don't like you don't mean someone else is not out there waiting to hear you.

If its your dream, never give up because you will always wonder what could have been. How bad do you want it because your going for the same dream as millions.

LOL wow. The truth hurts once it stops being so goddamn funny. That is real truth and everyone who complains about making it in anything needs to read this post lol. But anyway, to the OP. You ask anyone who with any involvement with this business and they'll tell you no crying. I don't mean to say you're crying, but you sound a little naive. If you respect this art form you aren't gonna master it in 1 year. The art of MCing is like any other craft in human life. It takes dedication, perseverance, growing your talent(your timing, clarity, wordplay, rhyme-structure, cadence, vocal quality, vocal inflections, subject matter etc). Study your favorite rappers. Reach out to producers on this forum. Start out with mixtapes, find instrumentals online and hone your craft 1st through remixes or redo's of other songs then you can move onto originals when you have the funds to buy a leased beat. When you're confident enough seek out producers to work with consistently. Your fave MC's/rappers or whatever were at this for years before they developed the sound you hear through your speakers.

Expecting to cut it in 1 year is naive, sorry to say, and disrespectful to this genre. But you're better than one friend of my brother's; he said he'd try rap out for 2 months and if it failed him he would move on to something else(not that race matters but he happened to be white as well). You have to love this by studying this music from the beginning. Study the classics study the history of your favorite artists. Learn from their struggles, their triumphs. We all have had that "man what the **** did I get into this for?" moment.

But don't give up, after you try these suggestions and still no one is feeling it....then maybe change it up. But you're nowhere close to that point yet.
