I have my wife and that's all I need all the rest of that stuff is useless..fight the temptations.

and to fuel that hunger folks sell drugs, so that can have the flashy clothes, jewelry their fav. rap artists have...
and not get influenced by rap to where they start doing crime ...you are right the ppl in your environment as well...and those in your environment listening to songs like "Get money,f everything else" or whatever
and aren't you the one saying influence allows you to sell things/make money

young ppl buy shoes/clothes because the media/commericals says it's hot,the thing to have and then more ppl buy because they see someone wear the shoes
visa-versa
sometimes advertisers take trends started by a group of ppl and commercialize it for pop-culture

Kids only imitate what they see first hand. how come you dont see white kids or black kids in the suburbs under the same thing. Kids are kids right? But let me guess youre gonna say parenting. I know kids in the hood with great parents that try to keep them on the right path all the time, but when youre surrounded by it you want to be it. You see it first hand.

young people buy shoes that the media buy yes. but we're not talking about shoes, we're talking about art imitating life. Yea people buy jordans because of the name brand and because theyre expensive. Not because a rapper has jordans on. Jordans and shoes are bigger than rap. If you could just plug shoes in by attaching them to a big name rapper, companies like Lugz would be better off. Remember the Birdman Lugz or Funkmaster Flex Lugz.. remember Dame Dash & Pro Keds

so its not quite the same thing.

gotta stop looking to blame the media and realize you are your brothers keeper. We influence each other more than the media influences us. Ive been watching basketball my whole life. The only reason why i played Bball at a competitive level was because i saw my cousin getting sponsors and attention and i said man i wanna do that.

the only reason why i made beats was cause i seen my dude come to my crib, install fruity loops on my computer, upload some sessions. We went to harlem and he made 5k off a beat CD that he made in about maybe 4 hours. I knew producers had money, Scott Storch and Timbo and all them, i knew they had money, i knew what they did. But not until i saw that first hand and saw that money exchange did i give it a shot.

so what im saying is not that the media doesnt influence at all, of course it does. But your environment influences a whole lot more than the media does. Your surroundings are very important and who you surround yourself with is very important

I think Drew just summed up why people sag their pants.

... it's not because their parents do it. Their friends do it.

I have a hard time keeping my son in line now. Some trifling 12 year old girl calls my house at Midnight on week nights.... smh. Where are her parents?!?

and their friends, seen some older cousin do it. And that older cousins pants sag cause he got bags of drugs and a pistol in a pair of jeans that dont fit already. Its all a trickle down of what people are exposed to.

Thats why you gotta really be on it, and be aware of who youre kids are talking to. Thats where my parents messed up cause they were too busy working to support our family, while i was out hanging with the bad kids tryna be cool and fake tough

influence is two fold first-hand influence(you are talking about) not debating that sir.
second hand influence (the media which I'm talking about)
I believe it's a combination of the two
ppl imitate what they see on tv as well as what they see peers/the ppl in their communities
I heard the words "YO","what's up", not from a friend by from a song "media/ent.
Saw women shaking their butts not in my community but on a rap video
so did the girls I knew saw Pantra get on her head and turk so they turk on their head.

some started making beats after watching hustling and flow that is was cool..90% of those ppl that started after watching hustle and flow probably aren't making beats now though lol

but let's agree to disagree sir.

so what has influenced YOU more. Your surroundings or what you watched on TV?

what has influenced you longer? and how strong is that actual influence

if people are out there pickin up beat machines after seeing hustle and flow. and stopping after a year or 2.. is that influence as strong as you claim it is?

---------- Post added at 04:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:50 PM ----------

i wanted to be a power ranger so bad from the ages of 5-7. Im not sitting here trying to be a power ranger as a grown ass man though lol, so how strong was the Power Ranger influence on my life as the man i am today lol. Shaped my child hood for sure, but outside of that, it was just TV.

and if you believe that the media has such a stronghold on the people, then what steps do you take to make sure your kids aint out there doing it. Just because you live a christ-like lifestyle now. Doesnt mean your kids are gonna grow up that same way. They may go out and into the world away from you, live amongst strangers for 4 years at college and realize everything you've been telling them was a crock of shit. (not saying thats true at all, just playing devils advocate) but it happens everyday.

Birds of a feather flock together. And its the same with young people, and even "adults"

but that influenced you at that time...

Let me hop on the topic...

I would be considered your typical "good black man"...

Did my undergrad at CSUF, got a good paying job, single, no kids, attractive (at least I think I am lol) and no debt.

Now, I grew up in Pasadena, Ca with all the BLOODS, went to a all BLOOD H.S. and was heavily influenced by the gang lifestyle and everything... BUT

Like Drew said, college is maybe one of the few ways to get yourself out of that everyday reality urban street show. I listened to songs about people being shot and killed, a couple of my friends got shot and killed, listened to rappers pushin weight and gettin money and seen it first hand.

SO, until I was able to completely uproot and go to a entirely different environment, I may have never realized what else is "out there". Now, I'm not trying to be all corny AF and say go to school to be cool, but my college experience was more educational that the classes itself. I was in a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENT with very different influences.

Ironically, I now work in higher ed and aside from my job duites, I act as a mentor in our ASPIRE program to help out brothas and sisters stay on course through college that went through the same shit, if not worse than me. I get to host a lot of music related shit with them to so that's always fun. I just can't wait til me and my boys get enough work to do music full time...but back on topic

I'm telling yal, if you want to be successful, hang around successful people and if you don't know how ask someone who you deem successful, how they got to where they are now.

I'll never forget I was at the dry cleaners one day and this mid 30's black guy pulled up in a phantom. I didn't want to come off as a groupie, but put my pride to the side and asked him what do you do for a living and how did you get to a point to afford a car like that? He was actually glad I asked and gave me a bizz card and we chopped it up for a while. I think some brothers are very eager to share some wisdom and help you succeed if you ask the right people. Not TINY from da block who got that 08 745Li with 140k miles acting like he is successful. Use discernment here.

Ask yourself this, if you were to rate yourself on a 1 to 10 scale, 10 being everything you would aspire to be in life, what your number? Now rate those that you believe are rated above you. I try to hang around 8's,9's and 10's.

Ya homie that stayed in front of the house everyday that is STILL hanging out 10 years later probably won't change, so you either need to move on or positvely influence him to move on.

I think I can go on and on, but I'll stop......here

end rant.

Oh and by the way, I'm 27 and the youngest and only black person in my dept at work. Median age is 36 and primary ethnicity here is white and asian. I say that to say, I have to "talk that talk and walk that walk" just to be treated like the rest of my coworkers as well because some of them had a prejudice as to how I was supposed to carry myself.

Ok I'm done for real now. lol

Oh come on Deranged. This sagging thing makes our people look so ignorant . And it did start in prison, you just don't wanna admit it. I bet some og in the hood told you that it didnt to cover up the truth

No. Prison bychez wear jumpsuits backwards with them unzipped/buttoned exposing their bare azz. Kris Kross dressed like prison byches. People referred to them in the beginning for wearing backwards pants off their azz, then it went on to be f**ked up in history as sagging in general. I'm sure you let just anyone tell you otherwise and ran with it. Smart-dumb muthaf**kas.

And we look "ignorant" when we do anything. Why give a f**k? I look "ignorant" when I eat a piece of fried chicken in public. I look "ignorant" when I get into an argument or fight. White folk go to the bar get drunk every night and get into it(lived in Cali a decade, I KNOW), why they ain't all over worldstar? Don't act like skateboarders don't go way harder with oversized jeans hanging off their azz. Do they make their people look ignorant?

Y'all spend too much time behind computer screens. I thought I was the uncle tom around here. I guess pants hanging off our azz is the real issue, but folk act like it's wrong Trayvon got shot over appearance(ironically by a hispanic who was above looking like his vado brothers. If he was tatted and wore khakis this shyt wouldn't have been news). Ain't Trayvon just one less dude making us look ignorant? GTFOH.

I'm from where I'm from. It made me the person I am. I own tons of jewelry(that I've outgrown wearing so it sits in a jewelry box). Used to hang my pants off my azz(now I'm grown and don't no more). I'm not gonna downplay what I once was even when I do leave the house in cosby sweaters and slacks more than tims and hoodies now. Just because I outgrew things doesn't mean I'm gonna criticize the next guy who's prolly in his teens to 20s doing shyt similar to what I used to do.

I've never gone to a job interview with pants off my azz or jewelry showing. Indication I was raised with some sense. Who gives a f**k about how I or anyone displays fashion on their time? The guy looking at my azz hanging out just a lil too long frontin like he don't wanna see it? lol.

I guess next week we'll discuss how weed ruins blacks like whites don't smoke more/better shyt. After that we'll discuss backwards hats, cause they make us look like hoodlums, yet white folk rock their hat to the back 24/7 as well. Then we'll get into all of the face piercing blacks have gotten into. We're the only ones, huh?

the typical good black man doesn't have kids ?

This very thing could be what's the problem here, regulary slamin big bootied hoes but don't dare to put some kids on the world

^^^In defense, if you focused on school/career, young and single, yeah, maybe you shouldn't have kids.

although I practice "having kids" venomously, I ain't tryna bring no kids in this world until I'm at least 26.

too much shit to accomplish in my early 20's.

i think kids should never be a should or shouldn't question, a lot of people put career > children but when they lose a child they're worse than if they'd lose all their money, and they pray to god to get their child back, so children are a privilege

^^^That you should raise when you've put yourself in position to do a good job at it. Guess I shoulda been blessed with kids back when I was stomping people out and running from cops with pants hanging off my azz...no, didn't deserve that "blessing" at that time, and my kids would be f**ked up!

Oh quit it deranged, you sound like a old bitter ass man, old bitter ass black man at that. you said your not gonna go hard on young people sagging just because you used to do it, smh. Thats what life is about, correcting the mistakes of the youth that you once did so they wont make the same mistakes
