I figured I would start a thread paying homage to some of the more under"appreciated" producers, current or all time.
I know this is an opinion thread, so try not to turn this into some ad-hominem argument. Debating is cool as long as you can be objective!
For me...
My most underrated producer is ...
Large Professor aka Extra P
Large Pro, to me, was a pioneer.. An overlooked legend who played second fiddle (undeservedly) to Primo. (Maybe 3rd or 4th even to guys like Pete Rock and a few arguable mentions)..
Dude just got the most out of limited hardware for a still relatively new genre of music and was just dumb creative with it. He was a loop and lace type of guy but his drum programming was bananas and he was a mster of time stretch. He also was a mentor of sorts to the legendary Primo. They are cats around the same time who surpassed him (Erick Sermon comes to mind) but in 1990 he introduced the hardest sound and really changed the game.
Honorable Mention: Ski, Beatminerz, Jake One, DJ Khalil
Most Overrated Producer.......
Ahhhhhhhhhh.... How many people saw this one coming? LOL
To be fair, of course the BIGGEST household name usually gets the "Most Overrated" lable by default. And let me exclaim that I am in NO WAY stating that Kanye lacks talent!... He does indeed have talent...
The reason why he is labeled MO to me is because of a few reasons...
1 - While he IS a progressive artist.. He refuses to let his music do the talking for him. Instead he decides to go into the lab and recreate himself and then feels the need to sell it to people through his own glorification. "This IS the next amazing thing in Hip Hop and NOBODY has done **** like this before, EVER" - Yea, I'm sure nobody has.. But who cares if it is progressive if it really isn't that good.. And in terms of his latter material, I really am not that impressed at all.
2 - He just rode the hype machine for all it was worth. He could do no wrong in a musical sense. The aura of invincibility makes you criticize his work that much more. For me, his original sound was what compelled me to really dig the dude.. And his LESS compositional was better and his MORE compositional work was less impressive. When you combine that with the fact that he uses session artists for instrumentation almost exclusively makes you question his #1 billing and if deserves his merit. Snare for Snare and Kick for Kick a guy like Tim, while still highly billed, is a cut above. I have to mention Kayne JUST niched Dr.Dre for MO.
Honorable Mention - DJ Premier, Dr. Dre, (this kills me) J Dilla (Yes, I know.. but to me , HE IS!!), Polow Da Don, Alchemist
