hey, i just got a yamaha mg10/2 recently, but when i plugged in my turntables (Technics 1200's MK2) to the mixer, i was getting a really low input and had to crank the volume all the way up. my theory is that maybe the yamaha does not have a pre-amp to boost the levels of the decks? i just want to confirm if i still need a dj mixer so that i can get a good volume level. but since i'm using my turntables mainly for sampling anyway, could anybody suggest a lower cost alternative? i'd really appreciate it, thanks!

i use the exact mixer only i use a numark and a dj mixer;numark into dj mixer and dj mixer into yamaha

Indeed, to plug in "normal" turntables, you need phono preamps. Not only do they boost the level, but also apply RIAA equalisation (even if you have a regular preamp strong enough to boost the level to a workable level, the sound won't be optimal).

There are two options for you :

1) you get a dj mixer or any other device that has phono preamps. Plug the TT's to that device, and the outputs of that device will end up in your Yamaha console.

2) You can find separate phono preamps. They usually don't cost a lot (less than a dj mixer for example), for a pretty good quality. They output a normal line level, that you can thus connect to your Yamaha.

I said "normal" turntables, as there are models that have a preamp integrated, and have a line output also. This is not the case with your Techs.
