its not, but it does make things easier. for example you could have your mixer or plugins on second screen which reduces flicking between windows or trying to hide plugins from view

I wouldn't say it absolutely does make things easier, It depends on the DAW, if you have ProTools having one window as the mix window and the other as the track view is very useful... same with Reason, I don't see any real advantage of two monitors with Ableton Live or FL Studio... also it can cause problems with latency, especially in ProTools

its not a must but it makes things a lot easier.

One thing I find most useful is being able to open a manual on a second screen.
