hey guys ive always heard the term tracking engineer but never knew wat it was??

I believe it is in reference to the Engineer who would handle the tape machine(cuts, punches, etc). Aka tape op...as opposed to the mixing engineer (guy at the console).

Tracking engineer is the guy that records, or tracks, the vocals and instruments. Mixing engineer is the guy that mixes the records. Usually they're one in the same at smaller and home studios.
