Like what exactly are they payed for? Do they just put their name on the cover and their voice on the songs, or do they help with anything else? What exactly do they do?

Jack popular beats for irrelevant artists and scream "we the best" every 5 minutes.(sarcasm)

they introduce songs, ad adlibs, put their names on the cover, they will also add sound effects and scratch and chop up records (most of them)

Help you become well known in the industry depending on the dj, that is the main purpose behind it.

err that would be a waste of money if thats all they did...id be looking for distribution/exposure...

well in my case, i select songs, arrange their order so they flow nicely together, i acutally MIX the songs so they flow one into the other, no stops or breaks or screaming my name in between songs to mask the fact that i can't mix, and i intro the songs of the lessor known artists. the part that most "mixtape dj's" fail to incorporate into thier "mixtape" is the actuall mixing part. just cause you put some sound efx between songs, scream your name, or put a skit between songs doesn't mean you can mix, it normally tells me that you can't mix, have no idea how to select and arrange songs, and can't keep the mood going; so they fool you with drops drenched in delay and reverb and talk all kinds of crap to steer you away from the fact that all they know how to do is work the equipment, not how to actually rock 2 turntables.

So the artist handles getting the song mastered, cd duplication, and coverwork, and the dj handles everything else?

depends on who's project it is and what the terms of the agreement is. if it's my mixtape, i handle all that. but i do real mixtapes, not the kind of demo's that have come to be known as mixtapes. if i'm doing a mixtape for an artist and they want me to handle all that, then i will for addtional fees.

A Mixtape DJ Will Do (Depending on who you hire) :

- Mix the songs together after one another
- Blend, Scratch, Juggle, Etc Skills
- Make everything flow together
- Add an overall presentation/flare to the tape
- Vocally Host the tape if you wish
- Uses his name/buzz to expose you to new listeners/media outlets
- If you seen a good dj /skills you'd know

What a Mixtape DJ DOES NOT DO (Majority) :

- Distribute your project
- Duplicate it for you
- Get your cover art done for you
- Master your songs
- Mixdown songs

Alot fo you on FP just think the mixtape scene is a site like
datpiff.com and thats it ... Check out MixtapeKings.com,
MixGrind.com, MixtapeVille.com and other distro sites and
see that mixtapes are a business most of you are just not
in tune with. I'm a mixtape DJ with a fairly good buzz and have
had my mixtape featured on MTV, AllHipHop.com, HipHopDX.com,
magazines and etc ... Check my myspace for credits.

They yell over tracks and make the shyt annoying as all hell.

Back in the day a mixtapes were made by talented DJ's that actually mixed and blended tracks on mixtapes.

Still some good DJ's out there I'm one of them. Here is an example of a mixtape made by myself DJ Chaz All songs are Mixed/ Blended. Notice it contains zero shout outs of myself.
