What college courses prepare you to prosue a life in rap.

I'm a youngin wanting to know what courses to take in college that will expose me to the rap side of the world.
 
Dude, not to be negative, but gimme a break. You don't go to college to "prosue" a life in rap. You go so that you can learn how to spell words like "pursue". Aim a little higher than a rap career and learn about something that will keep you fed like a business degree. I can't name many rappers that are college graduates anyway.

However, let me humor you. Political Science will actually give you something to rap about besides the club, hoes, and money. I'm not saying become Mos Def or anything, but content wise, you can learn alot of stuff about past and current events that will up your lyric game.

And if you want to socially be exposed to a "rap world", go to a historically black university. I go to Howard University in DC and there are a lot of cats here tryin to blow up.

Like I said earlier though, don't go to college to soley pursue rap, it's a HUGE waste of money. Go to a music school if that's your focus.

Howards homecomings are off the chain...Hampton has finer chicks to me though...But thats tight...If Howard would have gave me a little more bread, same case for Hampton...Thats cool...

P.S. Everybody wants to be a producer and a rapper, producer/rapper...but i doubt Mr. Crunk is even serious...

You don't go to college to pursue rap, you go to get better at somethgin that u already know how to do but wanna get to know the technical side of it or learn how to do it professionaly.You can't even go to school for rap but you could take some classes that improves your knowlegde towars it.

absolutely wrong. If you want some college courses that's gon help you in your rap/music industry pursuits, try these...


Economics - teach you about Markets and what drives them.

Accounting and Finance - How to take care of your money, and the rules that apply.

Marketing - The nature of the marketplace, how to push your product successfully to the market, and how to deal with the competition. Puts you inside the consumer's mind.

Public Speaking - How to put words together more effectively, to make a stronger impact. Rap is just public speaking. Public speaking is putting words together effectively, it's matching up rhythms, sylables, all that. Plus you're gonna have to do interviews, etc.

Psychology - Why people do what they do. Plain and simple. You're gonna deal with alot of different characters in the industry, and it would be great to already be in thier mind before you even come up against them.

Management - As a rapper, you're gonna have staff around you. You're gonna need to know how to effectively manage that team to get the best out of them, for your career. Management is not just how to tell people what to do. It deals with motivation, etc.


That's just a small list. This is coming from a Business Grad who's going into the music industry, and all of the above plus more has helped me out greatly.

You should also take journalism-public relations courses are also available depending on which school you attend-that way the media can't misconstrue your quotes or mess your image up because they can do that and they WILL do it too...just a thought...

I have a bad feeling about this "newbie".

Political Science oppened lots of opportunities. It brought me to Thailand and now I have new material to rap about: thai ho's, discos and money.
 
KRS One has a course.

... I think it's called ADVANCED BREATHING TECHNIQUES ... or something.

I remember that course from about 6 or 7 years ago. Try that one.

Acting/Drama I dont think you need college to take those courses you can sign up anywhere learn how to squint your face like game, learn how to keep a lie up for years about how hard you are and surpress the fact that you had a large xmas tree with alot of gifts. Study gunshot victims learn how they live day to day and incorperate it into your life.

It was a real course, it was more of a seminar and colleges would book him to come and talk to students.

He did cover breathing and rhyme delivery. He also covered record contracts and a bunch of other stuff. He had a lot of guys he knew that talked on different subjects.

He taught most of the rhyming stuff. Rhyme schemes, patterns, topics and gave critiques.

I saw the flyer but I didn't care to go to the class. I saw part of it on TV though. He was giving all of the kids low marks on topic and rhyme delivery. Most of the kids had never rapped a day in their life.
