Is a 6' by 6' area too small for a vocal booth? What's the smallest/largest size you should build a vocal booth? thanks

9 x 13 x 10h is nice for a small vocal room.

Anything much smaller and your peaks are going to bunch up right inside the fundamentals.

6x6x(8?) is deadly. If you rip out all the drywall, fill the studs with 3" OC703 at varying angles and cover the studs with some twill, it "might" work reasonably well. But there still might be too much coming back at you. It's going to sound dead as dead can get, but in theory, you won't have such mega-problems with the lower mids.

You aren't going to have an awful lot of isolation - But you really can't have both in a space that tiny - Without complete reconstruction, you're either going to get decent sound with a lot of low end and lower mid leakage, or crappy (horrible) sound with good isolation.

Wow that big!! ok i'll have to redraw my studio plans. I have an unfinished basement that im putting a movie theater, bathroom and my studio in. Its total about 1600 sq. ft. so room isnt that big a deal.

Are there any blue prints or specs that "professional" studios use for control rooms and mic booths? Ive searched and im having a hard time finding any.

thanks

oh yeah....and the ceiling isnt 10' high. Would i have to make the booth bigger to make up for the height room?

thanks again

You need to catch up on your reading before you drive the first nail -

F. Alton Everest - 2 books you MUST have...

* Master Handbook of Acoustics

* How to Build a Small Budget Recording Studio from Scratch ... With 12 Tested Designs

thanks for the books i'll check em out.

Not that im even looking at getting one of these, but everywhere i search for vocal booths, these pre-fab vocal booths pop up. Are these things any good? ( www.soundsuckers.com ) Cuz damn some of these things are like 5000 bucks!!! And from what your saying WAY too small. some are like 4' by 4'!!! just wondering.

thanks

Ahh... But the specs -

NIC's of just over 30 - Pretty much the same as a insulated drywall over wood studs wall. And notice that the ratings are tested at *over* 100Hz. I wonder why...

Because everything below that passes right through as if it weren't there at all. That's why. You can't try to contain low end in a space that small - You have to let it go somewhere.

And the WEIGHT - 650 pounds for that tiny little box - That's a lot of mass in a very small space. IF that mass is used correctly, it can absorb a good amount of lower midrange. A 4x4x8 closet, drywall, studs, insulation and all would only weight in at around 300 pounds.

So, the thing probably works fairly well for what it is - But it's made for isolation - Not for superior sound quality.

And as I mentioned somewhere (maybe not this thread, but somewhere around here) if you ripped out all of your drywall, filled it with OC703 or 8#/cu.ft. rockwool and used pegboard for the outer walls, you'd probably end up with similar effectiveness. Still not ideal though.

thanks very much for all the replies. I will do tons of reading and hope some of the numbers stick. thanks again
