Just curious to see what you think were the most anticipated debuts?

1. 50 - GRODT
2. Snoop - Doggystyle
3. Dre - The Chronic
4. Puffy - No Way Out
5. Nas: Illmatic

I also wanted to mention a few albums that were heavily anticipated but were a pretty huge letdown...

1. Jadakiss - Kiss The Game Goodbye
2. Jin - Whatever That Shyt Was Called
3. Drag-On - The Opposite Of H20
4. Cassidy - Split Personality
5. Styles P - A Gangsta And A Gentleman

Just taking note of how a couple of nice emcees were signed to the Ruff Ryders or Full Surface labels and the production was subpar. I could go days on what should have been done differently, but what's done is done. I just can't see how one "family unit" could drop the ball on so many dope emcees.

Do oyu have something against ruff ryders. All the letdowns were ruff ryder albums.

Usher - Confessions

Eminem - Encore

50 cent - The massacre

JAy Z - The black album

Oh nah it's nothing personal. I was just pointing out that a lot of people were really waiitng for those albums, but they didn't live up to expectations.

I chose Ruff Ryder/Full Surface releases on purpose.

One more I would add to your most anticipated list would probably be Jeru Tha Damaja-The Sun Rises In The East. I remember cats anticipating that one like crazy.

Also King Just. But he never came out with nothing after Warrior's Drum. We were like damn when is this dude's album dropping??? But never did.

the game - the documentary
50 cent - get rich or die tryin
snoop - doggystyle
every single album pac drops yearly(yeah there not debuts i know)
big pun - capital punishment (thats just one of my favourites)
oh and im not some g unit groupie, i just think that everyone whos anyone knew about the game and 50s debuts, because there singles were being played everywhere

2. Jin - Whatever That Shyt Was Called

no offense to jin but i don't think anybody really cared that he was coming out with an album at all. it was pretty much given that it would be a letdown just like most of the other RR albums. amazing how one can have such good freestyles and flow and have such sh*tty sounding songs.

Ready to Die-Biggie

Its Dark and Hell is Hot-DMX

GRODT- 50 Cent

Chronic- Dr. Dre

Doggystyle- Snoop

Top 5 Letdown Debut Albums...

Kiss-Kiss the Game Goodbye

Memphis Bleek- Coming of Age

Honestly I thought Santana's first album was gonna be dope...

Lox- Money, Power, Respect and their debut on RuffRyder...

Canibus's debut album...

Q-Tip's solo debut lost as well...

For once I agree with you....'cept the fact that I was anticipating it because I knew Ruff Ryders would drop the ball. I just wanted to see how badly. I think Jin should have dropped another "Get At me Dog" as the first single and stayed away from that I'm Chinese crap. The first song/video should have had him battling himself PERIOD on some alter ego ish.

But Cassidy used that idea on his latest album.

On another not, I think GRODT has to arguably be the MOST anticipated album ever. With Wanksta still getting spins...the bullets...the beefin' with Ja and Murder INC....man that was genius promoting.

50 Cent - GRODT
Kanye West - The College Dropout
Snoop - Doggystyle
Game - The Documentary
Puffy - No Way Out

1. Ice Cube - Amerikkka's Most Wanted (His first solo album after leaving NWA, THE most influential music group EVER)

2. Snoop - Doggystyle (this was probably the most anticipated rap album in history, after everyone heard what he could do on the Chronic)

3. Dre - 2001 (EVERYBODY wanted to see if he could do it again. And when this one dropped, producers were starting to get more limelight than rappers) btw...this was his Aftermath Debut

4. Pac - All Eyez On Me/The Don Killuminati - EVERYBODY wanted to hear what Pac would sound like on Death Row AND fresh out of prison. And after our beloved Pac was murdered, EVERYONE wanted to hear what his last words were. (His Death Row debut, and his Posthumous debut)

5. Eminem - MMLP - After what this white boys said on SSLP, EVERYONE wanted to hear just what he would say next. (his major label debut, cuz SSLP was 95% pre-Dre material)

and osama...

Nas was pretty much nobody before Illmatic dropped. Illmatic is what put him on the map. Only thing people really knew of him was a few guest spots.

and...

Who wanted to hear Puffy rap? No one had heard it before, and I don't think anyone was really anticipating it. Now after the album dropped, people realized that the album was pretty dope. But i don't think anyone was FIENDING for a Puffy album.

Jada's was a big letdown. I'd say that one was more anticipated than No Way Out.

Nobody ever, EVER gave a damn about Drag-On. He wasn't even talented enough to be IN DMX's shadow. I mean dude has always been UBER ass. I mean he is ass NUGGETS hanging off of ass HAIRS.

Cassidy...no one cared about him outside of NYC. He was just looked at as just another Producer's flunkies.

and Styles P's debut was STELLAR. I mean i thought it was phenomenal. I still bump it. That CD is on par with Scarface's The Fix.

(sorry about not seeing the Debut criteria, but i tried :) and in my defense, Power of the Dollar was 50's debut. :))

DMX-It's dark and Hell is Hot

He had several singles off of there and they all were hot, X came out the gates green but harder than any rapper in history.
Only track he was on (mainstream) before the Ruff Ryders releases was LL's 4,3,2,1.

Ice Cube-Amerikkkas most wanted...Nuf said

Canibus-Can-i-bus-If you heard 2nd round knockout and beast from the east.....nuf' said...he tried his best but clef was on some other sh!t....those beats/concepts should have been for a Pras solo

Ghostface-Ironman
Raekwon-OBFCL
Method Man-Tical
GZA-Liquid swords
Old Dirty Bastard-Return to the 36
Killah Priest-Heavy Mental
Killarmy-Silent Weapons
Inspectah Deck-Uncontrolled Substance
RZA-Bobby Digital

Back then young as I was I was already in a DJ/rapper networking circle and we went crazy waiting for these to drop. They practically invented the prolonged album push back, so they kept you constant anticipation. How did the skit go on Enter the Wu-Tang.....
"You know what I want to hear....
DJ:Wu tang?
"Ahh yea again and again......"..that guy was 90% of the rappers/producers in the 90's.

Masta Killa-No said Date
That a personal fav that I waited a decade+ for...I can die now.

Madvillian-Does it count, not the biggest in hiphop but when I heard Madlib/Doom were going to collab I damn near fainted.

--Not Yet Released but anticipating--
Charlie Baltimore
Saigon.....don't hate just "say yes"!!

There used to be a huge debate about whether or not Snoop or Nas had the most eagerly awaited album in history. Maybe years later, most of those "waiting" finally agreed that Snoop's was most awaited by the general public and Nas was most awaited by industry execs and NY period. How could you not be anticipating the NEW RAKIM?First week sales proved Snoop's position. I saw a tv special about this once but since I can't remember when and where I saw it it doesn't really matter.

Besides....50 snatched that crown hands down. Unless you wanna talk about how many albums were shipped between Doggystyle and GRODT...and the debate continues....

PUFFY??????? Are you crazy???? Dude had like 3 cuts from his album already spinning in heavy rotation before No Way Out dropped. Two of those tracks were playing since Winter of '97! The album didn't drop until July. Once again, those first week sales proved Puff's position. I spent 3 weeks in Puerto Rico that summer and that shyt was bootlegged before it even hit U.S. stores....

Drag-On was awaited by SOME of us over here. If you don't live here then yeah you weren't checking for that shyt. It's a mixtape thing. Hell even most of NY didn't even care.

And Cassidy????? LOL!!!!!! First of all he's from Philly not NY. SECONDLY....You must not listen to mixtapes do you? That cat was SERIOUSLY EAGERLY AWAITED! I think the only reason why he didn't sell plenty is because the dudes were mostly checking for him...just like Jada, and we all know that men don't buy records. Oh and before you mention that "Hotel" track you should peep what he says about ladies track on "The Problem Vs. The Hustla". Producer flunky? LOL!!!!

And Power Of The Dollar wasn't even released commercially. That's pretty much why I didn't consider it a debut album. :)

Tical was pretty heavily anticipated.

And Lady of Rage's album did come out. It was called Necessary Roughness. It was just back when Death Row had fallen on it's face...HARD.

Since you're up in that NYC/Philly area, you have a different perspective on what's "anticipated". Cuz alot of things that were "most anticipated" up there wasn't even a blip on the radar until the album dropped in other places, Cincinnati being guilty.

GRODT - Yeah, there's pretty much nothing I can say about that one. It was one of the most anticipated album of all times. I mean In Da Club was KILLIN em. People were even fiending for that album on the internet...it leaked DURING HALFTIME of the 2003 Super Bowl. And yeah, I was one of those vultures!

Puffy - He may have been spinning crazy up there, but outside of NYC, the further west you went, the more no one was really paying him no attention. Cuz the singles hadn't gotten to us yet. And when I heard he was making an album, I was like greaaaaat, another damn CEO compilation. And i turned back up the NO LIMIT SOLDIERS (I THOUGHT I TOLD YA!!!!!!)

And nope, I don't listen to mixtapes. Not alot of mixtapes make it down here, especially back 4 and 5 years ago. That's why we weren't really checkin for Cass and Drag-On.

You're up there at the source of all that music, cuz everyone you spoke of was east coast. As you go further west, we don't get the chace to hear that there is even a fuss until the album drops.
