I'm actually pretty sure it would raise the general level of, um, intelligence on the forums
I wanted to speak on that topic...

WTF has happened to this place? I don't want to say the average FP.com member is getting dumber - maybe "less knowledgeable" is the term? There are more and more lazy questions (ie. someone should type "RTFM" and lock the thread). There are more and more "I just bought reason, where do I download the orkester disk?" type questions...and my personal favorite "I juz got me a mpd cuz peepz sez I needz it to make beatzzzzz. wutz midi?"

...I think before you start w/ a VIP zone - you need to get your site back to where it used to be. Wake up your moderators and start locking threads to clear out the "riff-raff". Yes - you'll hurt some feelings and lose a few members - but isn't that better than losing your knowledgeable members...? This "let's be polite to poorly thought out (dare I say), stupid questions" mentality needs to end....else - your board will keep in the same direction as it is now...

Just my opinion on how to make FP.com a better place...but maybe I'm the only one who feels this way...

the site needs a forum with questions that have been asked a million times
like
"what software do i use to sample" and a bunch of other ones

Well, RTFM is the only method, and it sure would be good if admins would say RTFM and close useless topics....

We close, edit, move, remove a ton of threads every single day. And that's not half of it all.

It helps a lot if you report threads that seem problematic, have piracy talk, or violate any other FP rules. We try to get to as many things as possible but it's very hard to get to everything.

I'd say to an extent, most people will agree with the OP, but it's expected that with the tremendous growth this forum went through after the upgrade it's safe to assume a very large percentage of new members to be beginners with very few more experienced members.

Trust me when I tell you that I'm not here to make friends but I also don't believe in trashing a beginner that knows no better. There are people that want everything spoon-fed to them and you can usually tell which are those members.

Something that I do often with FL questions as of late is point users to the pages in the manual. Not only are most questions already answered there, but it helps to save time because I don't need to type it all over again. Also, I hope that it helps people discover how handy a manual is.

So please, report posts, it helps us a lot.

hmm...report posts.

When I click that, it says "use this to report spam, fighting and piracy"...but you're saying we can use it to report extreme cases of RTFMitis?

...or like the 100 posts in the hardware synth forum about "how come my trigger finger doesn't work FL..."?

lol...nah. I'll just start responding to people like dansgold does....but worse ;)

wait i thought i posted here? it was a serious post so i dont know why its gone. I just said I felt the thread was oozing with elitism. "RTFM" isnt helpful and not everybody has been here for years so how are they supposed to know if things have previously been posted a million times. just ignore the threads!

1st: Sorry for the length...

Maybe it is elitism... I've been known to be an elitist jerk...and have no issue accepting the label.

Maybe I just wish it was the way it used to be. Back before dude made the forum "look cool", I would sit back and read. There were always interesting topics. Now it seems most of the topics are "wutz vsti...how do i sample...where kan i d/l a midi contoller...whatz asio n where kan i dl it for freeeee...is fl better dan cubase and reasons...is applez better dan dell..wutz da best vsti/soundfont/rompler for $5.42...etc". Maybe there are no "stupid questions", but there are lazy, ignorant questions.

Maybe I just think people should try to help themselves and bring intelligent questions (...or hell...discussion) to the table.

You don't need years of experience to know a midi controller is not a hardware synth and does not belong in that forum. You don't need years of experience to know how to ask a good question. I'm not going to front like I'm "all knowing" or even on the same level as some people here - but I swear if I ever have a question, posting it here (or any other forum) would be a last resort (...not the first resort!). And the questions would be detailed and explain what I've done to troubleshoot the issue (meaning I've actually tried to fix it on my own). You will damn well know I've researched the problem and tried my best...and am only asking for guidance - not someone to hold my hand as I go potty.

RTFM is the most helpful response anyone can give IF it seems the person hasn't RTFM. The second most helpful would be STFW (search the web). If someone holds your hand - you're just going to come back tomorrow and ask another goofy question.

Honestly - I'm not trying to turn this into an elitist forum. That's what gearslutz is for. But this place used to be a few notches above most other forums...and I think more should be done to get back to that level.

I completely agree with Doctah. I myself get annoyed with the ignorance here and I am to the point also where I just don't care anymore I just say the first thing that comes to mind. If it hurts your feelings that I call u an idiot u should be happy Im having a good day. This site used to be great I used to just sit here and read and not say anything just read all of the info and absorb it. I wish fp would grow along with its members instead its going to end up like every other forum on the net. You will outgrow it and u will move on. I see myself outgrowing fp along with the other forums I visit regularly. I wish this was a more advanced place to learn from but people do not wish to contribute. I wish someone would start a thread with download links to manuals for very piece of software you can think of and sticky it I think and hope that would eliminate all of the stupid questions. And if someone decides they want to ask a lazy question just delete the thread. I see nothing wrong with helping newbs I was a newb not too long ago Im not expert I just hate people who aren't willing to help themselves but are expecting me to stop what I am doing to help them.

I couldnt agree more. This place has turned into a politically correct verison of rap music.com only difference is that the people on rm know more, are more talented, and are just plain stingy with the info because they feel under appriciated lol. O and the owner doesnt care what u do there as long as he make his money and u dont make any

Just don't pay the posts any mind.

I also don't help people after I see that they are not helping themselves. Then there are people that we go on for a couple of pages trying to figure a problem out and it's evident that they are making an effort on figuring things out. The smallest simplest things can be the most difficult things to figure out at times. Not always the case but it is at times.

On a moderator standpoint, time is better spent moderating other things. On a personal standpoint, it's better to move on to the next topic for me.

There are many other members that don't mind replying to simple questions. That's what makes FP what it is. Some members only reply to the easy questions, other members only reply to questions that need a little more detail. Yet others mix it up, etc...

I thought the point of FP.com was to help better people.
Stupid questions or not.
