I recently bought Cubase SX 3, hoping to hook up reason to it via rewire. I know how rewire work's and how to activate it in cubase.

Open Cubase, activate desired reason Channels via the devices drop down menu, then reason launches. Very simple procedure! Now for some reason, randomly, very randomly, say for example, i was gettin intricate with some Subtractor controls in reason whilst reason is in slave mode to host cubase, i get an error! This error telling me to try and save my work, and restart Cubase! This error is not specific in anyway to any part of cubase, it happens ofently whilst performing simple, to advanced tasks, as low as previewing sound files you want to import! Reason on its own performs without a hitch, and i can rewire it up into Adobe Audition without any problems occuring during a session.

I can expect a cubase session, without rewire applications in slave mode, and with them, to last around 20 minutes before i get this error, most usually as im getting deeper into complex procedures. Once this error pops up, click 'ok' cubase grinds to halt, slowing down XP and sometimes requring me to reboot! or it wont perfrom any tasks even though the GUI is still operational. All this relates to the use of any steinberg product also i.e. halion...

I've checked the internet for similar problems, but cant find anything that solves the problem.

Any help is appreciated it.

AMD Athlon 3200XP

I would first check if 'Release ASIO driver in background' is unchecked in the Cubase device setup. When checked it can lead to conflicting accesses to the sound device from different apps.

If that's ok I would suggest you look for an updated ASIO driver for your audio interface.

If that's ok I can only tell you what I would do next:
Wipe the whole disk, reinstall XP (only the very necessary components to run audio), the latest DirectX and Cubase only. Run it for a while and see how it behaves. Then install Reason, rewire it and run it for a while etc.

If it still crashes on a barebone config I would contact Steinberg.

good luck

I was thinking along the same lines. Ive always had problems with cubase from sx1. What a pain! Release ASIO is unchecked.

Would anyone point me in the right direction towards updated ASIO drivers?

Thanks...

You should be able to find one on your sound card's manufacturer's website.

We never had a single glitch with SX since we reinstalled the whole system absolutely barebone and tweaked for DAW use. The only card is a RME digital-only PCI card, the sound chip on the mobo and the parallel and serial ports (non USB) are disabled in the BIOS, no internet, no office stuff, no anti-virus, positively NO games!, no shareware gimmicks...

After reboot we have 12 system processes running. I suppose that's about the minimum you need to keep XP up. You might want to check your running processes and kill a few before running any audio app.

Thanks guys...

I have oftenly re-installed windows (not always willing but it had to be done) and found programs that werent working before hand, ran on the clean barebone system as you put it. I remember when reason 2.5 wouldnt run with my cubase sx 2, a clean install sorted it, but the problem seems to have come back again. Pain! Just wanted to clarify any other possible solutions, even though i knew what needed to be done...

Jus have to back all me stuff up, again :(
