I just wanted to ask all the good people here on FP what they think is the best software for chopping samples. I've tried Audacity and the like, but I'd like to find something more along the lines of what the MPC does, but in software form of course. I'd like something that offers auto chopping. Anybody got any suggestions.

Thanks FP

ReCycle, Sampletank, pHATmatik Pro. These are some of the slicing programs that I know about, but I know that there are more choices. Your choice.

Thanks for the response Speaker-Head. BTW I like the Rorschach avatar. Anybody familiar with the sample editors with in Cubase or Ableton? I was wondering if they have an auto chop feature?

ableton has a slice to midi feature....it slices the sample and puts the chops in place on your keyboard or pad controller....

it also has a very simple sampler called "simpler" that is very easy to use.....i have put a whole song in live and chopped it up using simpler then used the slice to midi feature for the fine chops...i drop the chops in a drumrack and then play them how i want with the controller...

as far as being like an mpc...i dont think any software ive heard of comes closer than live...go to the ableton site and check out the "drum racks" video...a drum rack is basically a virtual mpc...and if u have a pad controller or mpc the samples can be mapped out to your pads....there are 128 pads for each rack and its easy to navigate so u can dictate which 16 pads are live at any given time...each pad also has its own device chain which can be loaded with effects, other instruments, or other samples...

Cubase has automatic beatslicing and it's really excellent. I can't speak for the MPC though. I've never used one. Unfortunately, Cubase doesn't have a demo so you can't easily check it out for yourself.

Slicex from Image Line can auto-chop. I've never used an MPC but as far as auto-chopping goes I never been a fan of it, I always end up adjusting the chops anyways. Its now available as a seperate plug-in from Fruity Loops. Directwave is pretty pretty good for chopping/adjusting samples too. I was messing with Intakt before all that, can't remember if it auto-chups but I liked it. It's too bad its been discontinued.

Excellent, I have live but haven't used it a ton since I primarily use cubase SX3. I'll def spend some time with Ableton since everyone keeps raving on about it. I bought my friends copy for cheap but didn't have time to learn a new DAW.

Thanks

I've you're already familiar with Cubase SX3 then I'm surprised you don't already know that it can auto chop. You should be definitely looking into Cubase 5 then. The problem with Cubase is that it doesn't have a demo so it's hard to really advise anyone else to look into it. But if you're already into it, then the Cubase 5 upgrade looks very good. I think it may be the biggest upgrade I've ever seen during the years that I've used Cubase.

I also use Ableton Live but coming from Cubase it leaves a whole lot to be desired. But I like to use it for messing with audio samples. Cubase is a beast though. It's the one place where everything I have can come together. My Motif Rack Es is a pretty much a vst plugin inside Cubase 4 so I don't need to do any editing on the physical hardware. I just have to turn it on and off. All settings are saved with the Cubase session and I don't have to bounce anything down to audio. It's all midi tracks inside Cubase. The new Sound Frame is the best content manager I've ever seen. It puts every sample, every type of sample, mp3, wav, ogg, etc, midi file, midi loop file, even vst presets, at your finger tips. Everything syncs to tempo in the loop browser. I haven't seen any other program that is better at syncing samples to tempo. All controllable by shortcuts. Samples can sync to tempo, sync to your transport. Browse vst presets by type rather than by first finding an instrument. Just search for bass and find all the bass presets regardless of instrument. Instruments can be played in the browser just like Reason does.

The new stuff in Cubase 5 takes it to a whole new level. I'm particularly interested in the audio to midi feature. It's also got the new melodyne style audio editing on top of it's already best audio editor of any Daw. The new MPC stuff is also looking like it's gonna be very cool in Cubase 5. And if you're into serious instrumentation, the new VST Expressions is supposed to make getting realistic instrument performances a lot more easier. Check out the Steinberg website and watch the videos. It looks very good and should be available this month.

EDISON AND FPC PLUG IN IS ALL UU NEED..! that in the works with a mpd who needs mpcs haha

Recycle is quite straightforward and easy to use. If you're using Cubase, then Cubase, as already mentioned, as an automatic slicer.

I've always used Recycle to chop loops even when I was on Cubase SX1, and even though the newer versions have a much better integrated slicer built into the sequencer, I still use Recycle purely out of habit and comfort.

Recycle is great.

Recently, I have just been importing the audio to a logic audio track, cutting it up and dragging all the separate files into a new exs24 instrument and away I go. Quick easy and no need to leave the program I'm working in.

I still use audition to cut the samples into loops just because its fast and what im used to .

I just got Guru for actually chopping the samples , Its about as close to a MPC as you can get with software

Protools can Auto Chop also, precisely I love it. It will hit every trasient start and you can see the front and back end of what your chopping and extend it if need be. That's what I use when chopping big chunk pieces.

yeah since Cubase has been brought by Yamaha... Cubase has great support for yamaha keyboard sound modules and such... can't wait to see Cubase 6 when it comes out.. Cubase 5 is on a new level but 6 just ....blow my mind just to think about it.. same with FL Studio... when 9 and 10 come out Fl Studio just keeps getting better..... and bettter.... but I'm a true Acid Pro user and use FL Studio Producer as vsti inside of Acid I should see if I can rewire Acid Pro to Cubase 4 and then put FL Studio Producer Editon as a vsti inside of Cubase 4... how much is it to upgrade to Cubase 5 anyone know off top.. I guess I'm being lazy ...I should just go to the site and check lol.....

I completely agree, I think that Cubase 5 right now looks like one of the greatest DAWS ever. I know a lot of people go on and on and on and on about Pro-Tools, but I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Cubase. Cubase 5 certainly looks like the DAW to beat right now.
