which mic would be better for vocals? i've only heard great things about hte SM57... i'm considering the apex 435 just because it's a cheap condenser mic with good reviews

thanks for all that info... how effective is the poor mans pre-amp method? lolthe Blue Bird i hear is a great mic, also Pacific Pro Audio has this new mic the LD- 3. but now that i think about it they are both closer to $300. PPA does have vocal mics for around a $100 though check them online. as far as pre-amps go...ha everything i would like to have and/or recommend is around the 6-700 dollar range. i just plug straight to my m-box till i can afford a NEVE,Chameleon Lab 7802 or the similar; i make sure i get the strong "healthiest" (no clips) signal and then mixing in the box; pro-tools/plug-ins. if your using protools you can add gain (audiosuite) to the signal once the region has been captured; make sure the signal is clean (no hiss/pops) and boost it! the poor mans pre-amp method, lol. hope that helps
how do you like it on a rating 1-10 (10 being best)... hip hop vocals is exactly what i'm aiming to recordI use a sm57 for recording hip hop vocals. it's a neat mic. Can be used for a variety of applications, and not just instruments.
