SL-1200M3D Pitch Problems

I've been searching through this forum trying to find a solution for a problem I'm having with my SL-1200M3Ds. They're about 3 1/2 years old and the pitch doesn't seem to hold as well as it used to. It's nothing major, but it seems like I'm constantly having to nudge the pitch up and down to keep 2 records in synch. I know it is not a power issue because they are powered by a Furman voltage regulator. Is it physically possible for stylii cause the pitch to waiver? Otherwise it has to be a problem with the pitch fader itself. If I take them to an authorized repair facility, what should I have them do? Clean/Lubricate/Calibrate the pitch? Would replacing the entire pitch module be a viable solution? Thanks for any assistance.

if they haven't been used heavily, you shouldn't be having this problem. sounds to me like the faders may be dirty and having some contact issues. you should be able to clean your own faders using some cailube mcl 5% solution. i think radioshack may be carrying it these days. if you want to replace the faders, i'm hoping you will want to try and do this yourself. most places charge ~ $60 - $100/hr plus parts (their price on parts btw). if you want to do it yourself, the faders can be had for $40 a pair shipped. you need some basic soldering skills and patience. i'm happy to give you tips if you want to give it a try. - jeff h
 
I think I'll give the Cailube a try first. Do I just spray a little in the pitch module and move the slider up and down a few times? Is it necessary to remove the top cover before doing this? If that doesn't help I'll probably invest in a soldering kit and replace them myself. Is there a webpage with instructions for doing this? Thanks for you help!
 
SL-1200 M3Ds are notorious for Pitch control problem exaclty like you are describing....


First off, I have yet to see a M3D come into my shop that had the pitch calibrated correctly.....

why?

I think that because the Technics SL-1200M3D is the first real model change since the release of the MK2 in '79 ( Im not counting the 1200LTD even though its mechanically the same as the M3D, since there were only 10,000 produced ) anyway, there is additional wiring for the pitch reset and the internal pitch plactic conductive faderboard is a redesign as well

I think the assemblers in Japan have not be givin the new calibration specs and are using the specs for the MK2 model

what you end up with is 6 - 6.5% max pitch and the "floating" that you are experiencing with regaurd to pitch control

Anyway I can help you out and have done this for many, many DJs around the country
