roland 501 tape echo question

I just bought a roland 501 space echo. On high pitched short sounds such as a quickly picked guitar string the delayed sound tends to warble a bit like I'm hearing it underwater. Is this just part of the unique "tape sound" or is there something wrong with the winding mechanism? Or is it something else? Have I bought a lemon? any comments welcome.

yeah tape echoes do "suffer" from wow and flutter. Without hearing your one it's hard to say whether there's an actual problem or not - do you like it? If so don't worry about it, just sit back, turn the bass up and start making dub!
