riddim

what exactly does riddim mean? i thought it meant rhythm, but i just want someone to further explain this concept.....cuz sometimes i see a regular song and then that same song but with a different riddim, like the diwali riddim. can someone explain this.
 
the concept is to give a name and an identity to a complete instrumental

the dwali riddim is unusual because there are so many different versions with major variations that are named dwali riddim
 
aight, heres a hypothetical situation. there is a riddim called, say the 'phisphan riddim'. does that mean that u can take the acapella to any song and put it over the phisphan riddim, and this riddim will always be the same?
 
Basically....

A riddim is the the barebone beat. no vocals whatsoever...if you pick up a 45 you will normally see a track called "version" that is the riddim. Its getting more complex nowaday after lenky (The producer of the diwali) buss the diwali riddim. He builds the bare riddim basically what would be used for the verse then adds layers to different instances of the song for different artists to basically complement their style. back in the day there was one riddim that everybody would sit on...times are changing. big up to lenky

if you guys like the diwali, look for the masterpiece riddim and the time travel riddim. he was some other riddims but i can't memba dem off the top of my head.

Today, in all of music creation, there lies a riddum. some artists find it and some don't. for instance, take my favorite riddum, "sail away" and take cecile and elephant man riding the riddum. they master that riddum to a science. now put bounty killer to the same riddum and it's not at all as bouncy and bangin as the others. Riddums change slightly, but the artists on the riddum change often. i'm a riddum rider dj/producer. i spin reggea more than hiphop, why? because of the diverse attitude of the riddum. the blending of one riddum is easy as all hell. in jamaica, riddums is the music. not like hiphop, which always changes and never settles down for a second. riddums settle down and keep you dancing. and it also gives you an awsome perspesctive on the artists. play the same beat with different artists on it in a rap song, it won't work because of the less firey attitude that the hiphop artists possess's.to me when i spin reggea, i make it seem like the artists are in one song and spittin they verses, sort of like a compilation, one hot verse after the other. on that note, play da riddums mun!! MORE FIRE!!!!1

bredren, that same thing been going on with riddims since Studio 1 days- parts are overdubbed, left out, changed, etc for different tunes on the same riddim.
 
yup but its much more prominent with lenky.

ie masterpiece almost every track sound different. as opposed to say joy ride which practically stay the same.
 
dub/dancehall/ska/rocksteady all spawned from reggae beats and basses. i guess as the studio became more synth/sampler oriented in the late 70's, producers tried emulating the beats etc. on these new equipment. You can see how the riddims evolved to what they are now,,,,,,listen some eek a mouse, den some super cyat, then some buju, terror fabulous, den some beeni/ bounty den some elephant n u see wuh i talkin bout.
Riddim is so much more dan a backin track 2 us in d west indies,,,,,,,,,,is hard 2 explain,,,,,,,,,,,,,,u cud ony see it wen a riddim buss in d dance. In the west we doh even buy authentic copies of our own stuff,,,,,,,,most just pirate is a culture,,,,,,,,,,yuh go down town n see dem piratin blatantly in d streets.
Ever notice how some riddims constatly resurface every 3/4 years ? different instruments buh essentially d same bass and tab
