Pete Rock uses a technique when sampling his beats where he takes multiple song (sample sources) anywhere from 2 - 10 songs and he uses a part in each one of them to create one new beat. kind of like a collage. The thing i'm wondering is how does he match the melodies? The songs must all be in the same key right? if so so does he know or how does he find this many songs and put them together. if anyone can help with this i have an enormous sample selection that i will be willing to share including dj premier full track and sample listing, pete rock samples, j dilla, 9th wonder, alchemist, and stoupe samples etc... please respond with any help and you will be rewarded. thanks

it could be as simply as assigning them to pads on his mp.

haha i know

abstrakbeats i ment how does he make them fit together (the melodys match) how does he know the records he picks are in the same key .. how does he find out. or just how does he do this just as premo does

he prob plays the songs and hears the key our finds each key on the keyboard every time he finds that key and yes he does group them 2getha...now where's my samples :-)

If he uses Acidized beatmapped loops, you can pitch shift them without changing the tempo, change the tempo without changing the pitch, and then mix and mingle.

the samples have to be all major or minor. from there you just pitch the sample up or down until it matches your other sample(s). i do this all the time in reason using dr.rex. sometimes i keep adding samples from other songs until it sounds full and complete.

if u have an mpd its real easy.. just use the 4th slider to change the key/pitch of the sample you have on dr.rex

also filtering can clean things up.. dont just throw a million samples together unfiltered/blended thinking its gonna work

This may sound like a bit of rant, but i believe some cats can use and agree with what i've jotted below......skip if you illiterate or just don't like reading

hmm i know this technique i've used it a few times myself (not saying im a master or anything), i actually started doing this on accident when i was working on my bassline filtering, it's a bit hard for me to do it in FL due to only being able to tap one sample at a time, unlike the mp which u can address different samples to different keys, but in fl for me it's possible, just not easy as i'd want it to be.

It isn't that hard to understand with experience, i truly believe it's your ear and how you "hear" music that gets this job done, i think everyone can agree that.....as you become more experienced in sampling and beatmaking, how you hear music will begin to change, and how EVERYONE HEAR'S MUSIC IS DIFFERENT.

When i say change, i mean "CHANGE" not hearing a obvious sample like earth, wind, and fire "love holiday" and going "oh thats a tight azz soul sample, i know i can make something out of that!" or doing a loop out of the obvious.

Nah, i mean hearing something you'd never expect or don't like and already hearing what it sounds like pitched up and down before you even pitch it up and down, to see if you can use it to make something. Or when you hear it you've already took parts of what you've heard and started constructing a beat out of it in ur head And even doing that with what i've said earlier about the whole pre-hearing pitch thing, hence thats why some people be "humming" tunes out when they makin beats.

Take all that and apply it to 2 or more samples and your basically manipulating sounds and constructing them to how YOU want YOUR beat to sound like in your head, the next question is, can you use what you have to make ur construction a reality?. Ya gotta be precise though.

snizzy's 2 cents, hope it helps someone, i know it sounds crazy and all, but that's one of the ways my brain processes when im makin joints.

When it comes to fitting everything together or "trying out" all of the elements in this process, you have to toy with the pitch, timestretch and such...this is how you get to the yes or no process when it comes to eliminating what does and doesn't go with the standout melody your trying to get...it's all about the ear...and what you feel matches in a sample.

Pete Rock just have a great ear for what sounds good together... he's one of the few people that can take small parts from five different songs and make it sound good together. There's no special technique involved.
