Old sounding beats/loops....???

If my beats sound old...like their from the 90's or something....

Does it have to do with:

1. 90's Pattern/Beat concepts and recognition (Groove, swing, rhythm etc.)...???

2. Bad samples (low quality) and/or "old" samples taken from the 90's...???

3. Picking the wrong samples...???

Some of my beats/loops sound like they could belong to a hip hop/pop/dance song from the 90's.

They don't sound "MODERN".

For ex....If people used 808's back than...and obviously...STILL DO NOW...

How would you make a 808 KICK sound modern/now...VS...a 808 KICK that was used back in the 90's...??? Aren't they all still the same thing essentially (a raw/unprocessed WAV of a kick drum from a 808 style drum machine/sampler)...???

todays kicks are processed.. try an aural exciter... if you can rent one from your music store such as the aphex... you will never go back.. there are vst emulators out there but they go so far only

A sound characteristic is a sound characteristic. synthesis and sampling can achieve much of anything really.
Most synthesizers are capable of this as it is. Most samples too of course.
Such broadness is just whether or not a sound is similar to the something feom a given context and the steps take to achieve a sound.

It could really be any of the 3. I think maybe posting an example up of a beat you created might give us a better idea of what's giving you that vibe.
