New member... Music lover after some advice

Hello everyone,

Thought i'd introduce myself - i'm 25 from the UK and have always had a passion for all kinds of music. Being the youngest of 5 children, I grew up with 2 brothers and 2 sisters who had massively varying tastes in music and I seem to have a love for most styles of music at any time!

Just looking through my music library you'll find anything from The Beach Boys to Rakim to Kiss... if it sounds good i'll listen!

I've always had a soft spot for hip-hop/rap and although growing up i've had phases of appreciating all music styles, rap is one that has remained a constant favourite of mine.

When I was 17-22 I went through a phase of being into the club scene and started DJ'ing dance music. I actually ended up getting a resident DJ spot at one of the bigger nights in the North-West of England but eventually grew out of love with the music and scene. However this dip into DJ'ing did introduce me to some friends who ended up being music producers.

My nephew is a few years younger than me and appears to be going through a similar phase - however he is taking it seriously and I have enjoyed showing him some of the basics of DJ'ing and mixing - he now knows far more than I do!! He has gone down the college route and gone to a specialist music college in Manchester and is learning about production, sound engineering etc.

His interest and passion in it has lit a fire inside me. I work in a well paid full time job which is a positive - however I have a feeling inside me that I just have to do something to do with music and don't want to be someone who looks back in years to come and thinks "what if??".

So here I am.... I want to get into producing hip-hop / rap and beat making etc... I am aware there are sticky threads so please don't think i'm going to ignore these and just ask instead when there are already some of my questions i'm sure are answered already... However I do have a few questions...

My nephew is using Logic Pro as his production tool and I was going to go down this route with an iMac... Is this a suitable production tool for the style of music I want to produce? I figured him being interested in it will help me while i'm learning...

He is of the opinion all I need to start is a Mac, Logic and some monitors... however I have no idea what else I might need as I see producers using all kinds of equipment from midi keyboards to Maschine etc... What hardware / software is typically in a hip hop producers studio? I play the guitar (still learning!!) and know my love for rock and other music styles will be an influence on anything I produce.

Finally - main question - do you think I am best registering for a proper music production course like my nephew - or are there good resources (i don't mind if I have to pay) out there where I can teach myself, or get guidance?

I appreciate any time anyone has to reply here.... I'm eager to get started but know its just about learning, learning and more learning....

Thanks

You Need (at the basic)

Computer - an iMac should work, im on windows but I see many people using MAC
DAW - FL Studio, Reason, Logic : I use FL studio, any should work.
Midi Keyboard - I say start with 49 Keys, people will say you can go with 25 but I guarantee that once you get going you will want a bigger set of keys
USB Interface - most computers stock soundcard can't handle all the plug-ins that will be running within the DAW.

I reccomend not buying the hardware new, you can find it for a fraction of the price on ebay or craigslist.

Can't give advice on the monitors as it is also recommended to get your studio acoustic treatment which is pricey. As for a production course, use youtube honestly. It has everything you need starting out. Tutorials on any subject you can think of as far as music production goes.

Did that cover most of what you wanted to know?
