I know they do their drums on the ASR, my query is do they play and sequence their drums on the ASR then export them, or do they do them on something else then just sample them into the asr?

Thanks

What exactly is an Asr-10. I hear about it like every other day.

It's a keyboard based sampler. People swear by it's sound and capabilities.

Damn...is it rare or something because I've never seen it before in my life. How much will it run me.

Don't go buying one just because the Neptunes have one. The fact of you having gear, doesn't mean you can do the same they can ;)

Be like biggrome (and most of us Reason users), it's cheaper and quite powerful. Then once you've made mad $$$, feel free to indulge yourself with some nice hardware ... if you still see the need :)

I use a midi controller (EMU-Xboard 49), it's good enough for now.

Oh never. I never cop something because someone else has it. I like coppin **** that other people want just to stunt. Plus the legacy of it entrigues me.

Kanye uses the ASR too.

Just get FL and some damn plugins.

Truthfully I'm confused on this whole production thing. I wanna play every instrument I put into my beat...or atleast arrange it. I just don't know what to cop to make that a reality.

Midi controller..software..and vsts.

i recommend if you're not sure to demo Fruity Loops and Reason 3 which are the two major hip hop production all-in-one studios and if you can master one of them you won't have to trash them and you could use them for awhile (hey, 9th uses FL's preset bass synths) if you can play the keyboard and are going to purchase Reason or FL then i recommend getting a midi-controller keyboard (no built in synths, the M-Audio ones plug into usb and like all of them will play stuff on your computer) or you can get something like a trigger finger if you want to focus on drums and samples (although a keyboard is good for samples)

It's not sold new, which is probably why you haven't seen it. Check ebay. I'd guess 600 bucks or so offhand.

Could someone answer my original question?? Do they sample their beats into it or program them directly, at the moment all it's doing is disrupting my workflow, but I agree that it sounds ALOT better than reason etc.

to answer your question, im guessin they sequence there drums in the asr-10 and also in the triton. Whatever they feelin at the time. Keli's "Milkshake" is definetly from the triton, I cant really give an example of a beat that would have been on the asr but

heres a video of Pharell in the studio makin "In the Midnight hour". It was posted a while back. You can see the asr on the top rack and hes usin another keyboard, maybe they have 2 asr's and hes sequencing on it. Sorry the video is so small and blurry but its still sweet.

peep it.

-I like at the end when hes comin up with the hook of the song.

Yes thanks, I assumed that from watching the video - the bottom keyboard is denitely not an asr.
I'm trying to work out if the basic benefit of the asr is to make things sound "nicer" if thats the case sampling into it is much more of a benefit than creating on it (ableton live & cubase are simply much easier to sequence on). If so I'll be saving alot of time on having to make unecessary drum patches for the asr with chickensys from my existing battery kits.

Any ASR users aware of the pro's and cons to sequencing drums on the ASR as opposed to simply sampling into it via it's analog inputs and then back onto the pc?

Thanks for your reply Westorious.

The cats i know who have had it, always used it with a sequencing program on their computer. Reason bein, it has no WAVE display to edit, its displayed in NUMBERS/DIGITS. Its the only drawback i ever heard of um. I heard their effects are the sh!t too.

People use it for how it colors the sound. The sampler is also very simple and intuitive. Sequencer-wise, there isn't any benefit over any modern sequencer. It won't compare to any computer sequencer. Back to the original thread, I believe that Pharrell uses the Korg 01/W to sequence.

You just have to try a couple of sequencers and learn ONE inside and out. Hell, it's only a sequencer. That's just your pad and pen basically. I've tried the FL, Triton, MPC, and Cubase sequencers. I am a Cubase junkie because it's the sequencer that I've made MY best music with and I personally find it very intuitive.

IMHO, based on your initial question, you should steer clear of the ASR because with the old technology and midi'ing of everything, it will hinder your workflow. Workflow is VERY important. It wasn't until I got over all of this gear comparison nonsense that I actually started making good music.
