Need new needles?

what to look for or hear when I need to get new needles? I have ortofon blues right now.
 
Crumbly bass, muted highs -- sounds a lot like dusty needles when they're blown, or noticable loss of volume. You can put quite a few hours on Orties. How long have you used them?
 
@trainwrecked got it right you'll notice a big difference in sound but also in tracking, if your needle is jumping all over the place... might be time to change it out. look at the needle, does it look like it's had better days? sometimes dirt gets stuck in the tip which can be blown out or pulled out with finger nails... might be a simple free fix.
