Mpc 2000xl pad problem

what up guys. love this website to death so hoping it can help me out here.

i just got an mpc 2000xl and im stoked to start using it. i been making beats on it and all is good. the only problem im having is that when i hit a pad then hit another pad i want the new pad to cut the old pad off and its not doing it. ive been looking into it and i found that you need to change the voice overlap to mono from poly. i did that and it allows me to repeatedly hit one pad but it still doesnt make other pads cut each other off. someone pleeeeeeeeeeeeease help me. i love this machine but if i cant fix that problem im afraid i wont be able to make beats like i used to on the computer with my mpd. someone pleeeeeeeeeeeeease save me.
 
that didnt tell me anything man. i looked it up all that does is allow you to play different notes simultaneously. im really frustrated. im starting to hear there isnt a way to do it, and there has to be ive seen it done.
