Mixing Workflow and Procedures...???

Been practicing mixing with stems and multi-tracks for about a month in Ableton.

I am a little confused as to what to do next after adjusting pan and fader volumes...

I am thinking this is what should be done next...

1. Insert track effects and plugins.
2. Automation.
3. Sends and Returns with Delay and Reverb.
Some questions...

A. Should Automation come before or after inserting and tweaking channeleffects and plugins....???

B. Should sends and returns be last in the mixing workflow chain...???

Thanks for the help and introspection.

After faders and panning you can go with compression/limiting or gating/expander. Then you can add effects delay, reverb.then group alike tracks bass, synths, guitars, drums etc. This is my take on mixing.

Recommend "Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio" by Mike Senior - pretty much will walk you through the process.

Also recommended - "The Mixing Engineer's Handbook" by Bobby Owsinski. It'll more or less tell you that there are about as many processes as there are engineers. In other words, there's definitely no one right way to do this. Do learn from others, but don't do something just because someone said it or you read it somewhere.
